Great stuff! Like so many others, my family was the reason I got into photography. I've been missin' the boat on this style of phootography and need to try it. Thanks for the inspiration.

Great work and write up...I enjoyed reading it as much as looking at the "life" you captured in every pic....Bravo!

It's really a meaningful effort to do family photojournalism. Thanks for sharing!

I have some questions for the OP:

1. You use prime lenses. Is it difficult for you to get the composition that you desire?
2. Are your family members used to behave normally when your camera is around?
3. It's hard to capture the moments without asking people to "freeze" for a while. Out of say 100 pictures, how many do you finally keep?

thanks for the kind words all!

1: i work with what focal lengths i have vs wishing i had XXmm focal length. sure, there are sometimes i wish i had my 24 on when i have my 35, but i make it work :)

2: part of my approach to family photojournalism is that i am often involved with whatever activity my children are doing. so my family just does their thing, i never interrupt them or manufacture a moment. very very very rarely does my family even notice the camera.

3: i never ask anyone to 'freeze' and i never direct them to 'go stand there'. instead, i'll work backwards. i look at where my subject is and then try to find an interesting composition and/or interesting light. i might take 2 or 3 shots of each composition. but i do not machine gun it. i try to be deliberate and wait for the moment. again, i'm often involved in what my family is doing, so i might snap one or two photos then put the camera away.
