As the title says...I'm interested in getting the G11 but I'm wondering if I get the 270 with it if I still get ettl functionality while shooting with the camera in M mode.

I don't know about the G11, but my S90 works in Manual mode with the built-in flash using E-TTL. I can't imagine the G11 being any different.

You generally want to shoot with the camera in M mode when using any kind of flash, so it would be CRAZY if Canon didn't allow you to use E-TTL while the body is in M.

When the G-series cameras are set to Manual mode, the flash is automatically set to manual mode also so you'd have to set the flash output yourself. E-TTL is available only in P, Av and Tv modes (and, of course, the other automatic, i.e. picture, modes).

Oh wow, really? Looks like I was totally wrong. That sucks! Wonder why they deviated from how the EOS system works?

I'll have to revisit my S90 test, but I was pretty sure I was in Manual mode, adjust the shutter speed/f-stop until the window to the outside was properly exposed (thus underexposing the room), and firing away with the pop-up flash. Of course the room was properly exposed by the flash (as it should if it's in E-TTL)

It's ironic because a while back, during the G3 days, when a lot of the G3 users switched to the EOS DSLR camera, they were complaining that the 420EX, which is a fully automatic E-TTL flash, could not be set to manual mode by setting the EOS DSLR camera to manual mode, like the G3 could. So they were left with no way to manually control the output of the 420EX flash.

So shooting indoors on M mode is a hit or miss thing with an external flash? Ettl is great for these situations. Was thinking of getting the little external flash to go with the G11 exactly for this reason. But if I have to stick with AV, TV or P modes, makes me rethink my decision of getting the G11. What are your opinions?

Are you concerned that in Av mode, a very slow shutter speed might be selected which will prevent you from handholding the camera? If so, then you needn't be concerned because, by default, the shutter speed is limited to between 1/60 and 1/500 when an external flash is mounted in the hotshoe. There is a function called "Slow Sync" which will allow the camera to go slower than 1/60 in Av mode if you desire.

Actually I'd like to be able to control my shutter speed when shooting with a flash indoors. Drag the shutter and all. In "slow sync" does the camera allow you to control the shutter speed?

Slow Sync works when the camera is in Av mode. That mean that the camera will determine the shutter speed based on the lighting condition and the EC you have set. So you can override the shutter speed selected by the camera by +/- 2 Ev but that's about the only control you get.
