The ST-E2 can control and trigger any EX compatible flash which also supports the Canon wireless system, for example, the Metz 58 AF-1c.

NO. None. It will only trigger the Canon EX flashes.

Your option as to this is to buy a wireless trigger to trigger the flash.

Or if you want to keep using the ST-E2, then you have to buy Canon EX flashes.

What about the Sigma EF-5xx Super? I though that can be used as an E-TTL slave?

Actually, it can. You need to tape all the pins of the ST-E2 other than the middle one, so that it acts just like a manual trigger.

So you're using the Optical slave on the ABs? And they sense the light from the ST-E2? Cool! I guess by taping all but the middle pin, the ST-E2 just sends one burst of light at the moment of exposure?

Does the light from the ST-E2 show up in the exposure at all?

Yes, using the optical slave on ABs. Right, by taping all but the middle pin, the ST-E2 only send one burst of light, I never saw the llight on ST-E2 on any of my shots, maybe because it is so dim and easily overpowered by the strobes.

The ST-E2 has a near-IR panel in the front which blocks off most of the visble light so its light will not show up in the exposure.

Good to know. Wonder if this would work with the 580EXII in manual mode. No pins to tape, and just dial down the power to 1/64 and point the flash at the bee :)

I have a friend who has an AB800 and just picked up a 580EXII. She's currently firing her AB with just a long sync cord from the camera to the strobe.

No, you need to tape all the pins but the middle one. So only the middle one is on contact with your camera, just like using a manual flash on top of your camera.
