Shaina is a cabaret style belly dancer, and makes her own costumes. She wanted something for her dance website - we did a bunch of shoots of her costumes, and some fun ones of her directly.

This was shot with a gridded Genesis 200 monoblock - post processing was to reduce the saturation of her skin tones a little bit to give it a cold look to complement the sword blade.

Hands cut off, she's a bit pink, right side of the face, a bit under exposed, need more light in the eyes.

If you hadn't prefaced the photo with the write up, I would not have seen a dancer at all.In this instance, I would take a full frame shot, showing off her outfit and self.

The skin tone is going to be subjective, I would guess - but I wanted it "cold" - not monochrome or fully de-saturated :)

Thanks!

Belly dancing is the least "cold" dance I have ever witnessed! I have a niece who is in a troupe, and the passion, colors, vibrancy they bring to the art is amazing. I would never put them in a cold blade atmosphere?

My wife is a dancer too - many of the dancers in the local area practice Tribal Fusion, which is more gothic and dark than typical cabaret - Shaina does both and we got both looks and styles

Ah! I see, but if you are "drawn" to the blade style, then I would rather see more blade than sheath? You could really get some sweet shots with her full frame and the sword.

See below :)

I really like the slightly exposed blade so close to the cheek - I dunno, seems more threatening to me - more dangerous :)

Thanks - white balance and shadow is the result of multiple shoots and multiple lighting changes during a shoot. I'll watch the cropping - I guess, how do you get in nice and close, without cropping something?

Depends what you focus is on I would suppose? Frame it in the viewfinder ...use portrait and landscape.

In the second set of shots, see her arms in the #2? It looks as though she has no arms. You are losing the tip of the blade in all but one.Bits of elbows, shoulders etc. I know its much easier to say than to do!;)

I typically move my focus point around to get it on the face or eyes, depending how close I am (habit from shooting my 50mm prime wide open!) - I'll keep more attention on the rest of the body and extremities - I have another two dancers coming out this weekend, so I'll be able to put these into practice soon.

Thanks!
