How to check for body damage? 5Dii was dropped

So, my new 5DII is not as sharp right out of the box as my previous 40D with the same 50mm 1.4. I probably had to put in some microadjustment, but never had time to play around with the camera.

I didn't think much about it. until, my son drops the 5Dii with the 50mm attached at about 2.5 feet onto hardwood floors. That's arm level for a 2 1/2 year old. There was no visible damage to the body, but the 50mm just won't focus clearly anymore.

So I just put on another lens. The 5Dii focuses fine, but I had to put in a 5+ microadjustment to make it sharp. So, now I don't know if it was the recent fall that necessitated the microadjust or it was from the beginning.

Other than going out and shooting some pics. How do I check the body for damage? I'm still within the return period, but it may cost me a little.

[Update]
returned both for new ones. why take the chance

There is most likely damage to the lens from what you described... I wouldn't let a toddler carry around $2500 of equipment either =P

Why would you let a 2 1/2 year old play with your camera in the first place?

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

Camera *might* need re-cal and the lens new parts. Canon *might* do it for free it both are under warranty. I say *might*, since I think Canon checks for water, sand and impact. All of those void your warranty. So I think the cost for both is about $400-$500 USD.

The 5DII is new so send it in for calibration. The postal carrier is going to toss your package around with careless effort so I doubt Canon will be able to detect that it was dropped by you. The 50mm 1.4 is likely shot and will need an the AF replaced. I think it's $225 for the fix. Might try selling it for $100 and buy a sigma 50 1.4 instead.

I have the opposite experience with my 5d2. My lenses seem sharper than they were on my 50D, despite the higher resolution. At least in the center.

I also dropped my 50/1.4 from approx 1.5 m (5 ft). It still work despite a small (glued) crack in the filter thread. I guess I was lucky!

Send it in, tell them what happened so they can make it right, pay them and be happy that you got it fixed. This is an expensive tool and these things happen but hedging around the issue may not help, send in the lens as well.

I agree with Jannie. The 50f/1.4 min. fee is $85.
