I'm looking into buying the 1 light strobist kit with cactus v4 triggers. the flash that comes with it is the lumopro lp120. http://www.mpex.com/browse.cfm/4,12311.html (external link) i understand that this is fully manuel, can i still just put it on top of my 5dm2 with out any other attachments if i wasn't looking for off camera flash? ettl would not work right? would i be better off with a 420ex2 and a set of cactus triggers, then buy my light stand/bracket and anything else as i need them?

It's always nice to have a ETTL flash available to you when you need to do family stuff or events. Go with the 430exII or the 580exII if you can stretch the budget.

burrito, you are correct. You can use the flash on your camera's hot shoe, but you will not be able to take advantage of ettl metering.

I have the lumopro flash and enjoy using it. To me it's not a problem to take a few test shots when I'm doing snaps of family and friends. Although it would be nice to have the camera do the metering, I also enjoy learning how to "sense" the scene and figure out the correct flash power on my own. At half the price of a 430ex, you get a lot of bang for your buck.

I actually bought the strobist kit with one flash and all the accessories. I did not get the pocket wizards so I'm stuck using a cord. Not a problem with one flash, but if I get another flash I would like to move to wireless triggers--the cords would become a hassle real fast. I think the kit is worth the money for someone just getting into OCF.
