When shooting marcros does the 7D have a new feature to more rapidly adjust focus in AI Servo (helpful for shooting wind blown subject)?

Is this feature only available with Canon macro lens?

Thanks....

I'm asking because I was considering getting a Sigma 180mm macro but may reconsider now.
Does this feature really make a noticable difference?

for most serious macro work it is not a real necessary feature, but I like it. why not try both, either by renting or testing them at your local store.

In addition to requiring a Canon macro lens, you also have to use it at a reproduction scale of 1:3 or larger, for the normal Servo AF to change into the special macro servo AF.

Which Canon macro lens isn't a USM lens? The EF 50 mm f/2.5 compact macro? The feature works with the only macro lens I have, the EF-S 60 mm f/2.8 macro USM, at least.

Just based on Reviews I've read online the Sigma 180mm f/3.5 macro looks good for the price.

Does it require USM or would the HSM work?
Basically is it a Canon lens only feature?

I tried AI Servo (7D) with my 100 f/2.8 macro the other day to take some hand-held shots at MFD or thereabouts. Didn't really work for me until I switched to continuous drive where almost one out of three shots was in focus. To be honest, I didn't feel any difference from when I used other cameras.

USM and HSM are exactly the same thing -- one is Sigma's name and the other Canon's name for the type of motor that drives the focus within the lens.

I get the impression someone is mixing up IS, OS, and Servo Focus.

IS and OS are in the lens, and are different names for the same thing -- Image Stabilization for Canon - or Optical Stabilization for Sigma. It is designed to help correct camera shake.

Servo Autofocus is in the camera, and is designed for things that are really moving (sports, birds in flight etc) but it can help somewhat in the case of wind blown objects in macro mode.
