OK, how about if back of the drum from a old dismantled tumble dryer.

If it isn't that I'm gonna quit, no idea what else it could be. :)

Which of course means when it is finally revealed what it actually is I'll feel really stupid.

Not a drum. The metal part is a type of vent that gases pass through...however that's only one part of the complete object.

I just skimmed the last few posts so it might have already been guessed...but to me it looks like the inside of an "older" telephone. Geez...the name of the thing you hold up to your head escapes me (brain fart I guess)...but if you unwind the cover where you talk into or listen from...SOMEBODY HAS TO KNOW WHAT THE HECK I AM TRYING TO SAY!

yeah, the exit valve of a respirator, or an older style filter cartridge for the same
