Ah, yes. This is a Turft - n. A small, spotted animal in the rodent family. It is best known for its ability to swim through jello (which may or may not change its spots). Post mortem, it is often used as a zipper hang-tag in tribal rituals among the peoples of Truk.

a cut piece of poly rope, with its smooth white casing frayed, and of course the cotton innards exposed to the world...

its a stretch, but it's not the sharpest pic ever, either...
If not that then an end of a piece of tan yarn, maybe
