Looks like the texture of a very old camera body - the 'nipples' are little raised bits to assist your fingers in opening a door to put in film or something. Well?

The "nipples" are grips of sorts. And stuff does go inside this object, but no one has gotten it right yet.

You guys are guessing sort of in the right area (but no one has the right train of thought yet). Keep 'em coming!
