Awesome shot.

Yeah, but you didn't see all the ones that were tossed due to cam shake. They're not all keepers...

You got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em
Know when to walk away and know when to run
You never count your money when you're sittin' at the table
There'll be time enough for countin' when the dealing's done

1/20s.... why are we even debating whether the lens is at fault.

Read. It always helps. Canon sent me a letter stating that, in fact, the lens was at fault. Wanna copy? I can overnite it for ya.

And yes,...the 1/20 thing. Get over it too.

We are debating that the lens is at fault because Canon, who produced it said so. And that's why the store is even paying to get it back. They all messed it up. Now, compare that to a 1/20.

Tell that to Canon...I am sure they will love to sit down and hear about your testing strategies, champ.

This is like arguing with a brick wall.

You had a faulty lens. Sorry, it happens. This does not mean all 24-70s are bad.

Your methods were wrong. It just so happens that it was your lens' fault and yours.

I get it dude, I do. 1/20 was just one of the tests I ran cuz folks wanted APPLES TO APPLES,...it was just a test.

You might not understand that we are talking about 1300 dollars and i cannot just sit down and run a thousand tests on a faulty lens just to get closer and closer to a sharp shot...not gonna happen.

It's back to its ol'aisle. Let Canon pay for it...as you can see, they are not perfect either.

I will, however, increase my speed when I get my other copy...I will let you know. I am sure it will put a smile on your face.

I kept my 24-70 after the repair with the zoom ring a week after I got it in the mail. But it's my best work horse now. I used it all day today. Sharp, even at f2.8.

Good luck, Juan! I hope your second copy is better. I love mine.

When I first received my 24-70 I also thought something was up. It wasn't until I looked a little closer at the EXIF's did I realize I was shooting with to slow of a shutter speed. After I figured that out the lens became sharp as a tack. Yes even wide open.

As far as Canon admitting there was something wrong with the lens... I'd take that with a grain of salt. I've sent two cameras back to Canon for focusing issues. They admitted problems with both bodies. One of the bodies came back a bit sharper. The other one not so much. I've been able to use the micro-adjust to bring the second body into focus. I think this might be how Canon handles these types of problems. Admit they made a mistake and tell you they repaired and calibrated it to Canon specs. Even if they found nothing wrong.

I now believe that both bodies focusing problems were my fault. My first body was a 1DMK2N with a little bigger sensor with less DOF than I was used to. The second was a 50D which I still don't believe that I should have to make focus adjustments for but after doing so it seems to be a bit sharper.

Think about it. Do you think that Canon could not fix/rebuild any lens no matter how messed up it was and bring it back to better than new.

It seems my problems went away after accepting the fact that my technique was wrong. After adjusting for this I've been a lot happier with my results.

First things first, Chris. I like your post. You are, at least, being honest and realizing that the unknown is not something one should be ashamed of. A lot of folks in here speak as if they were born knowing the little they know. You know how it is, "a little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing".

There's a lot of things I still need to figure out about a lens that, for instance, lacks of such useful feature as IS. I do realize that. If you don't mind, I'd love to get back to you when I get the new copy, just to walk on your steps, learn from your experience and come up with my own. I'd really appreciate it.

As far as Canon admitting there was something wrong with the lens...don't be a naysayer...the samples you saw in here were done AFTER Canon returned the lens to me. You don't wanna see the samples with the serious back-focusing issue. I will be really embarrassed. I mean, really.

And yes, get them down from where you have them cuz they do make mistakes too. My new 40D had the "error 99" illness, and they did have to replace a bunch of stuff in it.

And yes, I TOTALLY agree with you. I do believe that, if they [Canon] want, they can rebuild and come up with something even better that what you got, that's why I did not return my lens right away; I wanted to see what they could do.

But I do want Canon to step up to the game and do a little more for the little guy. Like, what the heck is the serial number for if you are not going to say:--"well, this is not a phony item, it's a legitimate one, let's give this guys another [revised and corrected] brand new lens".

I want to get back to you and learn from you how to better calibrate bodies and shooting styles, if you don't mind.

Again, I did like your post. I did like it.

No, I don't think I am even scratching the surface of this complicated/fascinating world.

Yes, I have so much to learn.

No, I won't take it from any arrogant, I-know-a-little-more-than-you-do folks in here, cuz I will put them right were they belong.

And yes, thank you for your input, I think it was honest and it did gave me hope.

take care...
