I only went to an icefest once, there was a big crowd and I was extremely constrained in where I could go. This limited my angles and control of the background. Below is about the best I could manage.

In any case, if I had one piece of advice, it is to wait until late afternoon and then shoot the ice backlit.

No tips, but if possible gelled flashes look really nice on ice sculptures. Purple and yellow i think look great. If you do a little search around on the net theres many pictures to be found like what im talking about

I've also photographed ice sculptures only once and it was pretty difficult to find angles where the sculpture would both stand out from the background and look interesting.

Sun would have helped to make the sculpture more lively but on the other hand there would have been even less good angles available.

At the bottom part of this photo http://helsinkippusa.wordpress.com …7/a-prince-in-the-making/

the sculpture is hardly visible compared to the middle part where there are dark trees in the background.
