well thanks to complaints by the public they have blocked off the plaza the cauldron is in...no more getting close to it for me or the other 3000 or so people working here at the moment :(

At least there won't be anyone hanging around underneath it getting in the way...

Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining (well maybe a tiny bit :) )...it's good that everyone is finally getting a better view.

And I was one of those people complaining for good reason. If you can enjoy it close, so should we be able to. It's not even remotely fair that you get to go right up to it yet the rest of the public has to be behind a fence like some sort of institution. You had your fun.

I love the quote Furlong made about how they never anticipated the public being this interested in seeing the cauldron. Gee, what did they think would happen? I figured it would be obvious billions of people would want to go up to it, but apparently common sense has no business being in the Olympics.

Hahaha, "billions" I think is a little exaggerated when they expect 250,000 or so visitors for the games, then you tack on the residents, athletes etc, maybe one million.

Awesome shots you guys are putting out!

Whether the fence is in the way, or fast food costs an arm & a leg, it's the Olympics! Savour the buzz & energy!

When everything is all packed away and shipped out, Vancouver will be on the map with some kick-ass venues for our Canadian athletes to train at, and for Vancouver to host other international level sporting competitions.

The $6B price tag is a long term investment for the Lower Mainland of BC.

It has also been the reason we didn't get (totally) killed by the slowdown in the economy.

Atta girl Lindsey

Is there any truth to the rumor that the folks behind " Own the Podium" made a last minute pitch to the IOC to have "whining **** and moaning"| included as an Olympic
event so as to bolster Canada's metal count ? I think there area few amongst us who would be metal contenders;)

Wow...read my post...I said that it was a good thing that now everyone (meaning the public) is getting a better view!

I was lucky to be able to get close to it, and the reason I could was because I work in the building that the security fence is there for. We have to go through security (metal detectors and x-ray machines) everyday to get into the building, not to mention the security checks that took place in order to have access in the first place. If they had to do that for everyone wanting to get close to the cauldron, then imagine how bad the line-ups would be.

Also, when I was up close to it I was always as considerate as possible to the public...I never just stood around like many people, blocking or spoiling the view. I even moved a few bright orange cones out of the way that were between the crowd and the cauldron.

To think that the general public would get total access to the cauldron while it is lit is foolish (and no, I am not calling you a fool)...the actions of certain people last saturday should show the reason why!

Rant over, and no more "fun" for me...

Ahhh, yeah, roger that, buncha Ice Holes

I've never seen any footage on Haida Gwaii or any native lands. I guess all those eco tourist places just get by on word of mouth.

Give it a break, Mike. What benefits Canada and BC will spell dividends for the international tourist trade for Northern BC and any fool knows that's a better market than logging or mining right now. Proof of that is the Northern pavilions displaying here now.

6 billion dollars divided by 24 million people = $250.00 per person. I can think of many ways that I waste that much in a year, never mind in ten.

BTW, the Canon Minis are missing their rooftop gear! I saw four of them in a row yesterday and none of them had it, just the racks only.

The other thing I noticed last night was the large number of beautiful women in this city! It always was high but it seems to have gotten even more so. All the rain must be helping. :)
