I have researched this topic to death, but am still confused, and read conflicting statements from other people. Help appreciated.
I just ordered a Elinchrom D-Lite two light kit, while waiting for arrival I have been researching trigger systems, particularly the Elinchrom Skyport system. I sometimes photograph industrial machinery, so I cannot always stand behind the camera due to safety issues. So I need to remotely fire my 1Dmk3 and a set of strobes. Obviously a camera hot shoe mounted Skyport transmitter will fire the strobes with Skyport receivers connected to them. The missing piece of the puzzle is the hand held transmitter to camera shutter release part. Can I do this with Skyport hardware or am I forced to PW for this level of functionality?

I've heard that the Skyport Universal receiver will not work with some cameras due to the short contact duration of the receiver. However, I just tried it with my 1DmkIII and it seems to work fine so I'm going to assume yours will work with your 1DmkIII as well. If not, you'll need to seek an alternative solution, like using PW units.

Because the Skyport Transmitter is only a transmitter, it cannot be used to trigger your camera but it'll still be needed to trigger your remote flashes. So you'll need another Skyport receiver to plug into the remote release port of your camera. And, of course, you'll also need another transmitter to trigger that receiver. This Tx/Rx pair will need to be set to a different channel from the one set for the remote flashes.

So, in a nutshell, you'll need two transmitters and X+1 receivers, where X is the number of flash units you have.

PacAce, thanks for the explanation. It seems we really have two separate systems involved here: System 1 would be the hand held transmitter to camera mounted (not hot shoe) receiver that needs a cable (Skyport mini plug to Canon N3 remote plug) to fire the shutter. System 2 would be the hot shoe mounted transmitter to fire the remote strobe with the connected Skyport receiver. I wonder if Elinchrom supplies a mini plug to Canon N3 cable? if not I'm sure PW sells one. It's seems for this type of set-up PW may have a more elegant solution as only one piece of hardware is required mounted to the camera, a single Tx/Rx. Thanks again for your reply.

I made my own remote release cable from a Canon wired remote release switch (RS-80N3) but you can get one of these for a more reasonable price than you can from PW:
