Best Buy has the Canon S90 on sale for $399. Which is what most of the on line stories are at. Anybody have experience with their 4 year protection plan vs the 4-year Premium Protection Plan? I think the 4-year Premium Protection Plan covers accidents as well, but do they just swap it out or send it in for repair?

They have changed there plans since I bough my A610 years ago. But I had what I think is the equivalent to the Premium 4 year plan. I brought the camera in to Best Buy because after my wife dropped it for about the 10th time it finally broke. They sent the camera out for service and I had it back in about 2 weeks.

Personally, I would consider bypassing the warranty. Check with your credit card company to see if they would cover and double the original warranty period at no charge. Best Buy will send out the camera for repair if anything happens to it. I don't think they'll replace it the same day. One warranty experience I had with Best Buy was that they would only exchange for "like merchandise" that comes close to your original item, in terms of functionality. Basically, you won't recoup your original purchase price to put towards a better camera if they can't fix it.

If you decide not to get the warranty, $399 at BB isn't that good of a deal. Adorama has it for $399, no tax, and you can get Bing cashback. Also, you'll occasionally find it cheaper. I think we picked up ours for around $360 on Overstock.

Shipping deal probably isn't still available, but I bought my S90 from B&H for $399 with free two day shipping. As for extended protection plans, considering all the electronics I have purchased over the years, those so called protection plans would have cost much more than the tiny bit it's cost me out of pocket. In many cases, when you return a product to be repaired under a extended protection plan, they will tell you to "take it to Joe's Fix-it Shop, he does all our work!" ;)

I too would probably pass on the warranty. I have found in the past that for the most part, when you try to use one, they are made to be so much of a PITA that you would just have been better off buying a new replacement yourself, and moving on. I'm 48, BTW, and have over the years had about a half-dozen electronics wty situations. The only one that worked out to my satisfaction was the Alltel deal whereby I ended up with a new replacement phone immediately when I accidentally trashed my phone. The rest, not worth it, IMO.

Thanks for the input, and the Bing cash back. 5 years ago I bought the 20D at BB and the 4 year warranty. 3 years into it the camera fried and they exchanged it for the 40D at no charge, except I had to re-buy the plan. When I sold the 40D I got a bit more out of it because the warranty was actually a selling point, we met at BB and transferred it over to his name.

Right now I'm leaning to just getting it at Costco, same price plus a 2gb card, but they extend the warranty to 2 years and I get 3% back.

I think the shortage of stock of the S90 is due to the popularity of the camera. I've noticed that our Best Buys have a bunch one day, and out again the next.

Well checked costco again and it's back in stock. I ordered and it's heading to Fulfillment. I won't rest till I get a tracking number. Almost all of our Best Buys get them in and gone within a day.

Don't forget to get the S90 grip. It will make a difference when handling the camera.

I upgraded the cable service in my house and as a thank-you gift I got a $250 gift card to Best Buy. I'll use that towards the purchase of an S90!

Doesn't this defeat the purpose of buying a small camera?

Too much stuff, not enough shooting time.

Not really, when it comes to adding the S90 grip. It hardly adds any unnecessary bulk to the shape. It's still a pocketable camera with the grip added.
