did a search and couldnt find a thread on this already:

thinking about upgrading from a 5D classic to a 5Dmkii..

the two reasons are for better ISO and for better cropability (is that even a word?) but having the extra res to be able to crop tighter

having video would be fun to play around with too

looking for opinions from people who have made this upgrade ..

was it worth it?

did you get the extra benefit and IQ worth the cost ?

Also the sensor cleaner is very nice as well. The 5D can be quite a dust attractor. I think the ISO benefits you'll enjoy very much.

One thing to keep in mind is that the RAW file from the 5D2 are monstrous, so make sure your editing machine is up to snuff, so to speak.

wow..im amazed you couldn't find difference on the net between these 2 cameras.

if you want better ISO and cropability then 5dmkII is the way to go.same for video.
if you arnt shooting at high ISOs and want IQ as good as ( or better) than the 5dmkII then get a 5d.

reading reviews on the net is not the same as hearing real user experiences

i have a 5D already, so my question was does the 5Dmkii deliver the better IQ and ISO worth the cost of upgrade (which is kind of subjective so i wanted to hear from peopl that have done the upgrade)

didnt think about the sensor cleaning, as yes, the 5D is a major dust magnet.

i do have a decent enough PC ... (quad with 8gb of ram) so not too worried about this

i suppose im just trying to justify the cost ... and make sure upgrade is worth the price

Agreed vis the 5D1 ("Mark I"/"Classic"). I love mine and will never part with it, but the dust drives me shazbot.

For me, 13MP is resolution aplenty, the 5D1's IQ is just stunning, and I couldn't care less about video. So as much as I hate the dust problem, I'd rather spend $1600 USD --a tad over 1/2 the cost of a new 5D2-- and get a second refurbished 5D1.

Yeah but with a bit of work, a new 5DII can be had for $1800-2000.

2 reasons I would upgrade:

1) sensor cleaning built it greatly reduces the stress of wet-cleaning a sensor as much.
2) the rear LCD is phenomenal on the Mark II. The Mark I almost unusable once you've used a 920K LCD for any length of time.

That's great news! But where? And how?

If that's the case, I'd happily go with a 5D2 (and keep the 5D1). Any more info would be greatly appreciated! :-)

5DII kit at Adorama for $3300; add the PIXMA Pro9000 Mark II printer for $50 net after $400 rebate
10% bing cashback brings it to ~$3000
Sell kit lens for ~$900
Sell printer for ~$250.

The price could be even less if you get bing cashback on the printer; I haven't checked.

Takes a lot of work and long wait to find one at $2000. I doubt you can find them at $1800. Most are asking $2250-$2400 used. I spent three weeks looking for one that would justify buying use but at $2300 and above is not worth buying use so I picked up a new one with bag, 16gb card for $2500. I would have bought a use one at $2000 but none to be had at that price.

I JUST downgraded. I had a 5DII, 5D classic that I have had for a long time, and my 20D. Those monstrous 21 MP files crashed my computer every time I opened a RAW image. I couldn't edit one image without my entire system crashing. I did love the video, and I did love the sensor cleaning. I also loved that beautiful LCD screen - it was to die for.

However, in terms of IQ, I am more comfortable with my 5D classic. I don't know why that is. I felt like the 5DII was more vivid in color - and I also felt like the midtones were brighter (on the 5DII). Having shot w/ the 5D classic for so long, I felt more comfortable editing 5D classic files. I felt like I was fighting the vivid color from the 5DII. This isn't saying that the 5DII is a bad camera, I am just saying I struggled editing to my liking with it. I hadn't gotten comfortable with it yet.

I did some ISO comparisons and couldn't really tell a huge difference between the 2 cameras.

Examples when I got my 5DII in May 2009:

IMAGE: http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/ww213/KrysiaG2/2009%20May/IMG_9670PPweb.jpg

Anyway, the 5DII is a fine camera, sharp as can be. So is the 5D classic. I love my 5D classic and will never sell it.

These were my very first pics with the 5DII right out of the box that first day and a few days later:

IMAGE: http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/ww213/KrysiaG2/2009%20May/IMG_9696PPweb.jpg
IMAGE: http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/ww213/KrysiaG2/2009%20May/IMG_00455DIIPPweb.jpg

But, I did end up selling it just last week. I downgraded to two 5D classics and pocketed $1100 difference. For now, I am happy with that. :)

Best of luck with your decision.

The 5d classic I have is used just as much as my 5dmkII.

The IQ has jumped with my 24-70L going from 5d classic to 5dmkII. I've found this zoom more closer to a prime IQ.

I'd get more glass to maximize IQ and to increase a variety of focal lengths. This would hold you off till the 5dmkII gets even cheaper. Consider a 35L or 85 f/1.8 or 85L and you'll have some more creative opportunities with fast glass at f/1.2 to f/2.2

The 5dclassic is still a very capable camera with absolutely wonderful IQ. Yes its a dust magnet (I've had little issues with that) and loves collecting dust on the VF but the bottom line is the images are amazing.
