This game is to help those of us who are trying to learn new tricks when it comes to editing.

Here's the breakdown of the game. I will post a picture that I choose, resized to exactly 1024 pixels maximum on the long side. Outside of being resized it has to be unedited...meaning no adjustments to any levels, it has to look like it did as it came out of the camera.

The game will last 72hrs and whoever can produce the best edited image (as judged by me) will be picked and it'll be their turn to post their unedited picture for all of us to take a crack at.

The participants must have their "Image Editing OK" turned on and they must provide at least a simple breakdown of how they edited the image, some entrants are a little vague on this point, please give us all details so we can learn and share tips. For instance if you use the unsharp mask tool or Smart Sharpen, provide us with the adjustments you used so others can try them out.

You can post multiple images, but the first image you post will be the one that is judged - all other images will be considered for knowledge and tip use only.

Also, please keep all comments, be they positive or negative, to yourself until after the game has ended.

If you happen to be the winner of the game please start the next one with the title of the game and the following number. For example…the next game should read "Before & After #255".

This contest ends at 8:00pm EST Wed, Feb 3rd, 2010

Here's a boring flat exposure of the "Wolf Moon" full moon from a couple of nights ago. I know this can be made to look a lot better.

Tweaked exposure and contrast, sharpened a bit. Tried to add some clouds but failed miserably.

I acquired an expensive camera so I can hang out in forums, annoy wedding photographers during formals and look down on P&S users... all the while telling people it's the photographer, not the camera.

Tried to give it a twilight glow by adding a blue hue to the sky and added a little shadow & sharpening & contrast to the moon.

In hindsight, not the greatest picture to play with, oh well... here's my thoughts:

deathcake - Looks good. Maybe a little bright around the edges.
Lore - The moon looks great and bonus points for the wolf. Looks like you even burned in a little shadow on the moon near the wolfs nose.
MirrorMan - Another good one. I like how you expanded the canvas to push the moon up.
onespot - The moon looks pretty good, but where you cut it looks a little raggedy.
KolorPikker - Great idea with the viewfinder and bonus points for the correct exposure settings. You probably should have masked out the edge of the moon to get rid of the blue halo.
obnoxiousmom - The moon looks good and I like the idea but the clouds look pretty fake. I kept thinking of some special effect from an old Star Trek episode. :)
Nigel - Speaking of Star Trek...
cccc - Not bad, maybe a little more contrast and sharpening?
duckduckdog - And more Star Trek...actually, like Nigels, an interesting idea but I'm not loving the red.
Palladium - Interesting look, I see what you were going for and like the blue sky. Like KolorPikkers if the sharpening were done on it's own layer and the edge halo masked out it would have looked better. I created sharpening actions that create a new layer via copy, convert to smart filter, then do the sharpening. That way it's one click and there a mask and since it's a smart filter I can go back and change the sharpening settings and/or since it's on it's own layer lower the opacity.

And the winner is......Lore!

I have a similar moon shot on my web site. So I duplicated the crop.

Great Job Lore. Did you shot the wolf photo?
