Here are some of my favorite looking images - from films - that I'm hoping some of you more "in the know" could answer how they were achieved. I would love to translate these "looks" to my photographs.

So let's begin.

Here is a Russian film from 2003 that won an award at the Venice Film Festival
"The Return"

mostly a blue tint, but there's something else that I can't put a finger on - desaturation first? and then the blue tints?

Now on to "30 Days Of Night"

If I'm guessing correctly, this had to have been desaturated a bit and added a lot of contrast. Plus it seems that the lighting really adds to the effect.

The same DP behind 30 Days... was also the DP behind "Hard Candy" he uses the same processing here as well.

Take a look

Here's also a video that I'd like to know the basic techniques behind the visual result. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h8XJqOpt8kg (external link)

If anybody could answer at least a bit with the knowledge they possess I would greatly appreciate it.

Wouldn't it be helpful if you said which PP software you have to work with? ;)

Try it. See what you come up with.

Since these are vid caps from films, I'm gonna guess that well over 80% of the look came from post.

I'll give the LD and DP props for getting the process started but most of the credit probably goes to the Editor.
