noticed a problem after installing XP RAW Viewer

i've noticed that i can no longer move or delete some TIFF and CRW files. XP reports that the files are in use by another app.

this is happening after my recent installation of the XP RAW viewer. the problem is mostly with TIFF files and on rare occasion with CRW files.

i've closed down all the windows, even tried deleting the files from a DOS prompt to no avail. Rebooting the system resolves the problem for a short period of time, after which, the files becomes locked up again.

has anyone experienced this, and does anyone have any solutions?

I installed it last night on XP Pro with SP2.

I've just tried deleting both tiffs and RAWs as an experiment and all seemed well.
I'll be following this one with interest!

I've gotten it with normal thumbnails. I use Process Explorer (a free download Task Manager replacement) to find out what is still using it. Then I kill it. In the case of Explorer, I use Task Manager to start a new instance of Explorer.

I had the same problem cutting and pasting RAW files off my CF card in the card reader. Even rebooting didn't fix it for me, so I just copied it then deleted it in my camera.

My speculation is that as soon as you display a directory with RAW (and maybe TIFF) files in it, regardless of mode (not necessarily in thumbnail mode), WIndows starts thumbnailing the images in the background and doesn't release the "ownership" of the files.

I think I narrowed it down last night when I was arranging files on my backup drive. I had copied several folders of images to the drive from my portable drive, successfully renamed the folders (from CanonXXX to what I wanted) and even moved the resulting folders to another location. I was trying to get the files sorted into 700 MB chunks so I could back them up onto CD-R.

At one point, I decided to rename a couple of the folders. No problem. Then, I wanted to rename one of the folders again (I'm so indecisive ) and instead of just right-clicking on the folder and selecting rename, I accidentally left-clicked. The list of files displayed in Explorer, in detail mode (just filenames, sizes, date created). I noticed that my hard drive became very active about that time, too. I left-clicked on another folder (without images in it) and the drive kept running pretty constant.

I right-clicked on the folder I wanted to rename and selected the Rename option (the whole time, my drive is clicking away) and changed the folder name. When I pressed Enter to accept the new folder name, I got the "Cannot change the name - another program is using the folder" or something like that.

Same problem here.

It is fairly obvious now as when I was installing the viewer it took forever with a huge amount of disk IO. It was obviosuly finding all RAWs to begin thumbnailing them etc. I uninstalled it today and it also was found to be looking at all CRW and CR2 files on my system as it did so.

Anyway, its a bug so deinstalled until it is fixed.
