What are some average settings people are using? I was taking pictures of the eagles along the Fox River and was not happy with my pictures-all soft. I was using my Canon 70-200mm L USM with 1.4 extender. Any advice for cloudy/sunny days?

This link that another member gave you a couple weeks ago should do the trick: http://linruphotography.blogspot.com …unction-settings-for.html (external link)

You want to have the shutter speed at 1000th of a second or higher if at all possible. That lens with an extender is going to be slightly softer than without the extender. I use a 400 5.6 and try to go out on sunny days only to maximize shutter speed and lower ISO settings.

I'm thinking about possibly heading up this weekend. I only have a 70-200mm 2.8. I considered renting the 400mm 2.8 (mix of reasons why I'm leaning towards not renting) but am leaning towards the 400mm 5.6 so I can hopefully do two weekends. I will be using my 7d and was kinda worried about going too high with the iso. Anyone able to provide shots taken with the combo.

The other reason i'm debating about the 400mm 2.8 is the weight and need for a tripod with gimbal head. I only have a manfrotto 055xprob tripod and ball head and honestly I'd rather handhold. Any opinions?

I will add a few from last Sunday.

This one is a little soft but I was acutally tracking it and wanted some shots near the flags, I was surprised to actually get it.

The 400 5.6 is a great lens with the 7d for there. I rented one in the past. I have a 100-400L now and use it about about 370-380 where it seems sharpest. I have found that I get best results at f8-f9 ISO 640 and keeping my shutter up around 1/1600. That was a very overcast day. I think you will be happy with the 400 5.6 and how easy it is to hand hold.

Thanks Heap, I think I'll probably just rent the 400 5.6, tried in years past with the 70-200 with 2x extender. It worked and for the equipment, I got some alright shots. Just really tempting to try out a $11K lens.
