Spent the day out there yesterday but the clouds came in in the early afternoon and we missed the great afternoon light. Plus the wind was out of the east, so not a great day for photography, but there are still a lot of eagles around and they were very active.

Can anyone provide information on the eagle situation and/or their own projections on possible best 2020 dates? I see that the eagle counts are almost non-existant at 14 with more at 15. Trying to tentatively plan for our long trip (from east Tennessee)

Thank you for any help .... We have been to L&D 14/15 a couple of times before

Well, as you probably know, weather, cold weather, is the trigger here. Extended periods to freeze over large areas of the river. And we have not had that here in our region. I'm 90 miles away in north central Illinois. Looking at extended forecasts, cold weather is predicted but...?
I generally say the last of January/ first of February is the best "guessing period". I, personally, have not been to 15. 14, the last 2 years, has given me all the eagle shots I can handle!
If you pick a time, feel free to pm me for what info I may be able to provide.
Good luck!

Thanks Rog
I appreciate your reply. We have a grasp of the key elements: the extended cold weather, decent skies and the predicted wind directions ... but not like the local folks would have. Our trip dates are flexible so that we can hope to made the best of the conditions. Right now we are looking at the weekends of Jan. 3 or Feb. 7
I will no doubt take you up on your offer of help / opinion as the dates get closer
Thank You

Watching evening news, reminded that 1 lane each direction is now closed on I-74 bridge at Peoria. Started today and already causing problems. In March, they're closing bridge completely until October. If thinking that route, maybe might check other routes. Fyi.

Looks like after tomorrow, the 15th, colder weather is in the forecast, low teens at night, still below freezing during the day. I'm South of there far enough that it should be a couple degrees colder at 14. Things may change a lot about 10 days from now and begin to freeze the river.
Rog, I've never felt good about wishing for cold, snow and brutal winds but it does bunch up the Eagles. On the small river where I live it has stayed completely open all year, an occasional Eagle will be seen, usually at great distance and hours between spotting one.

Spent the afternoon there yesterday, but never saw even one eagle go for a fish. Plenty of them around, but nothing exciting to shoot.

Went over to 14 on Tues. the 21st. Pretty much a bust. Quite a few birds over at the dam itself and occasionally one would head over. Hence, these fly over or near shots.

At 3 different times, there was an eagle perched in trees behind the parking lot. (Behind branches!)

Anyway, we'll try again, weather cooperating.
