I am starting to shoot sports, and I am new to photography as well. I was wondering what I should use for camera settings (I know some will change depending on the location/lighting/etc.) so that I do not get motion blur as seen below.

IMAGE: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4065/4326089779_e49f71fce4.jpg

Camera: Canon EOS 40D
Exposure: 0.006 sec (1/160)
Aperture: f/1.8
Focal Length: 50 mm
ISO Speed: 250
Exposure Bias: 0 EV
Flash: Off, Did not fire

Thanks in advance guys.
:D

I can't view exif info. To answer the question we will need to know shutter speed, f stop, and ISO. Without that data it's fair to say you will need to adjust either the fstop or iso to get the SS higher.

I have little experience with BB but I will tell you that based on advise I got here I use a SS of 1/400 minimum for mite hockey. I suspect you need to increase your iso to get to a higher SS. I regularly use iso 3200 with my 7D.

But can a 40D handle a 3200 ISO speed like a 7D?

And I am using spot metering, is that correct as well?

I would not recommend spot metering for sports. When shooting basketball you would need at least 500 sec. shutter speed.

Ok, center-weighted I assume then?
And I will have to jack up my SS a bit next time then.

Also, do you use a set focus point (like the center) or do you use the auto focus one.

I use my 40D for youth basketball as well. It's that or the old 300D and that ain't happening.

Anyhow, I use full manual. I'm using strobes so I can get away with a much lower ISO than you shooting ambient. Anyhow, ISO 640 to 1000 has been my range so far with my different light and lens set ups. SS 250 (max flash sync) and f/2.2 to 5.6 depending on which lens was used.

My first attempt at shooting BB was with the 50mm f/1.8. The fantastic-plastic machine wasn't that great. I got some fairly decent keepers, but most were not great.

First atempts with the 50mm f/1.8 lens

Then I rented a 50mm f/1.4. A faster USM lens, but again not great. Even though the f/1.4 50 is a USM it still wasn't up to the speed of the kids. Not so many keepers.

Second lens I tried, the 50mm f/1.4 USM, I had a lot of back focusing issue with this lens.
IMAGE: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4023/4270698042_0b5dab9344_b.jpg

So then I pumped up my total light output and went with my 70-200 f/4L. This lens is really fast to the focus, tracks well and is super sharp. It's just not the f/2.8 version so it needs a lot more light. I also pumped up the ISO. I switched between ISO 800 and 1000. I found that if I shot at around f/4 to f/4.5 I could go with ISO 800, but the next step to f/5.6 needed ISO 1000. Also, the 70-200 on the 40D is a little long and I needed to shoot from the corners and I found I was limited to only a few different shots. That lens length needs a bit or room on the crop bodies. Not that it's bad, I got a lot of keepers with that lens, but I like the under the basket action better.

70-200 f/4L use here, a much better sports lens, it just needs a lot of light for indoor use.

Now I have a 24-70 f/2.8L and I am hoping to lock down ISO 800, SS 1/250 and f/2.8 to f/3.5 and be able to sit in and around the key behind the baseline. I'll test it out tmorrow night at my boy's practice, then shoot for real in a back to back double header set of games.

Are you sure the ISO was really only 250? That would have a too be a VERY well lit gym.

Take a read through what I have posted throughout this thread:

https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?p=9519017

Quick summary would be to shoot at whatever ISO you need to get at least 1/500sec or faster shutter speed. 1/640sec is even better. I wouldn't be too afraid of ISO3200 on a 40D unless you are printing larger than 8x10. I would much rather have blur free images with a little grain. When I shoot indoors I would always be using manual exposure and center point only, AI servo focus. You may find that the nifty fifty has trouble keeping up with AF.

I have the 40D and use it ALOT for BB. I typically set it to, ss 1/500 or 1/640, f 1.8 - 2.0, and ISO as high as I need to get the right exposure, usually around 1600 or 3200.

here are some recent sample shots...

Its been said already but yah 1/500th of a second minimum for basketball, if possible try doing 1/640 or 1/800, or if lighting permits 1/1000th, I have trouble getting quicker than 1/640 in the gym I shoot.
