I would not recommend spot metering for sports. When shooting basketball you would need at least 500 sec. shutter speed.

What's your reasoning behind not using spot metering for sports?

I would be worried about a white or black jersey completely fooling the metering.

I would shoot manual if at all possible. Should be fairly easy to do indoors with even lighting.

It's not so much about metering, it's more about getting enough light through the lens and fast enough shutter speeds. That said, open up the lens to 2.0, set shutter speed to 1/640 and increase ISO until exposure is good. I don't look at the needle unless I'm shooting in the stands or something going on away from the court. Less light in those areas, so I just decrease shutter speed a bit to get proper exposure.

The key to my success is the ultra sharp 12-300 f/1.2 lens.

Geoff:

Check out my basketball shots HERE (external link). They were all shot with 40D and either 70-200f2.8L or EFS17-55 f2.8. Shutter speeds were usually 1/400 at f2.8 and ISO1600. Noise is really not an issue at that ISO. I shot RAW and if I recall in Manual mode. Center point focus, AI Servo. I was however blessed with great lighting in the gym.
