Hey all,

Made a trip to the Wildlife Refuge today. He had just tried to fight a Canada Goose.:p

How big was he? What part of the country was this shot? Could be a Red tail, Broad wing, or Cooper's hawk.

This is a juvenile Red-tailed Hawk. Notice the dark mark on the leading edge of the wing - these are called patagial marks. Those always show up on Red-tails (adults and juvies) except when you have a particularly dark dark-morph individual then the whole underwing looks just as dark. Also the belly band - which isn;t super apparent from this shot. Also the yellow iris and lack of the classic red-tail are indicators that it's a juvenile.

Nice shot though!

Ridgefield, WA. It was pretty large for a hawk, not quite eagle size but quite large compared to the other hawks there. He had just attempted to take down a Canada Goose but failed.

Great shot. The wing extension is great!
