Ok...I have a 40D which i am generally happy with, however, have been reading along of your various posts on the 5D, other than the FF and the possible resulting image quality due to the size of the sensor, are there any other major differences that I would find over the 40D. I am thinking of a 5D classic or possibly a 5d MK II...

Thanks for your responses

IQ at ALL ISO's - less noise, more buttery Bokeh, another camera...2 is better than 1. I'll be getting my 5D classic soon!

40D is a generation younger than 5Dc and therefore, harbours some improvements over it. In my opinion, 40D has a much better interface which is reflected in its menu system and better-endowed viewfinder. Faster reading/writing speeds to CF card, more cross-type AF sensors, built-in sensor cleaning and live-view all are among newer EOS features missing in 5Dc.

5Dc is unique for its sensor which would outweigh its shortcomings if IQ was the priority no.1 for its owner. Of course, it inherently has advantages of a FF body. I am not planning to off-load my 5D in long loooong time. :)

I haven't tried 5DII personally and cannot compare its IQ to 5Dc's in real life. 5DII includes more refinements in its interface although it carries the same AF system as 5Dc. From all feedback and reviews, you can conclude that 5DII is a fantastic piece of work. Maybe you might like to consider it over the 5Dc (unless you like to have a lovely and potent semi-vintage DSLR).

hmm, is there any specific area that you are trying to improve on your 40D output?

I use 40D and 5Dc together for about 6 monthes.

Overall, 5Dc will give you better image quality. Detail vs noise ratio is noticeabely higher at pixel level for 5D, the result is a cleaner picture in all ISO. At high ISO it gives about 1 to 1-1/3 stop improvement. Another advanage I noticed is 5Dc raw files are a lot more forgiving for underexposure, you can push it in PP quite a bit. The main advantage for 40D is it is more responsive, a noticeable quicker body. I persoanlly don't really care about the menu system, live view or sensor clean.

Ask you self a few questions:
Do you shoot at long end more often or wide end more often? If you shoot mostly on long end, the stay with 40D or upgrade to 7D. The 1.6x crop factor affect FL behavior quite a bit.

Are you looking for more DOF or shallow DOF? At equivalent FL, FF body gives you about 1-1/3 stop shallow DOF, so 50f/1.8 on 40D will have same DOF as 80f/2.8. It is quite noticeable. It was the first thing I noticed when I switch to FF. If you like wide angle & shallow DOF stuff, FF is the way to go.

If you're "generally happy" with the 40D why are you wanting to change (spend the money)? Every thing that has been said is true, higher ISO, shallower DOF, etc. But unless you absolutely need those things, and most can be compensated for with the 40D, the money may be better spent elsewhere. More, better glass? A trip to go shoot someplace?

The 40D is a very capable camera.

Why am I considering it? I want an extra body...and thought it would be nice to have the FF option...rather than another 40D. I shoot scenics, candids, some sports at high school level not pro...hockey, soccer, baseball. I am thinking the 40D is the best for the sports due to fast focus, and maybe the 5D for my scenics, candids..etc..Maybe the 5D classic is all I need ..thanks for all your comments

I'm certain my switch from a 50D to a 5D classic was an upgrade. Don't hesitate.

I have both a 40D and a 5D...

The 40D is my "bang away like hell with lots of "reach"" body while the 5D tends to be my "slow down, think and make as high a quality image in-camera as possible with standard and wide angle lenses" body.

I believe that my 5d classic complements my 2 croppers very well, and generally agree with most of what's been said here. Flying photog basically nailed it. The only downside is that I don't have the WA I would prefer for the croppers (17-55IS), since it also needs to double as a UWA on the 5d.

If you can afford the 5D2, then by all means get one. From what I have seen from reviews, and my limited first and experience, they made a few things better, and didn't screw anything up that made the 5D1 good. I, personally, didn't have the guts to spend that much on a camera. The original 5D, used, was a much easier cost to swallow, albeit still expensive for me. I really need to start getting some local photo gigs to justify my purchases...

I plan to keep my 40D because it is still a great camera. I'll use it if I'm going to photograph fast moving things and leave the 5D at home. The 5D is a little bit slow in that regard, so the 40D makes a good alternate.

I have both, 5D and 40D, all i can say is that all my lenses shine more on my 5D wide open. At the widest aperture, i get a better, clearer and sharper image from it.

I think every serious photographer owes it to themselves to at least try a full frame camera, if only for long enough to determine whether it's a benefit to their photography, or not.

Buy a used 5D, shoot with it for a couple months, and if you don't like what it's doing for your photography, sell it for very near what you paid for it. You might even make a profit on it; 5D prices haven't really moved in a year, except to rise slightly in the case of used, and refurbished prices are up $300 over last year.

Everyone else has described the benefits, and I agree, but I'll add one more: the viewfinder is significantly larger on a 5D than a 40D, something I consider very important:
