why do 72 ppi images look good on a display but bad in a print?

Monitors display 72-75 pixels per inch. A pixel is the smallest "picture element", hence, the term.

My Dell netbook's screen is 130ppi.

My monitor at home is 90ppi.

My monitor at work is currently set at 75dpi.
