Hi all,

Likely a quick question:

If I were to order a tranmitter and 2 receivers for a 580EX I and a II, do I need any other accessories?

Or if I order a set of Elinchrom Skyports (trans/rec), do they require anything else??

Thanks - I'm pretty green to the wireless tech with strobing!!

With the CyberSyncs you will be in this situation. (I have not used Skyports, but imagine they would be the similar.)

- 580 EX II: You have all you need. It comes with the necessary PC port cable. However, note that the cord is not locking. You may want to order a locking cable like THIS (external link) from FlashZebra.

- 580 EX I: This flash does not have a PC port so you will not have what you need in the CyberSync box. You will need something like THIS (external link) from FlashZebra. This is the same cord I use on my 430 EX's and it works very well.

I got these to replace the base on my 580EXs.
Works like a charm.

See, there you go, I forgot about that option. $54 of convenience.

You could also save $50 and modify your own, its really not that bad. You just gotta have some soldering experience. Look at the DIY Sticky and find the 580ex mod.

Still not sure I understand how this all works together - is this correct ?

(1) The FlashZebra Deluxe Canon Hotshoe would mount to my tripod screw.

(2) The CyberSync Receiver would then mount to the FlashZebra Deluxe Canon Hotshoe.

(3) The 580 EX would mount to the CyberSync Receiver

(What plugs into what ?)

Does anybody have pictures of this set-up ?

Also, if I get a umbrella bracket, does that change the set-up ?

Where can I read more about what equipment I need and how to hook it up for flash photography ?

If you want to keep it simple...
Get one of these (external link) for each speedlight. Mount it on whatever you have that has a 1/4 bolt. The base of the hot shoe adapter is threaded for 1/4 x 20 threads. Mount your speedlight in the shoe.

Plug the 1/8 in cable into your wireless receiver (Pocket Wizard, Skyport, Cybersync CSRB, or RF-602)
Mount the wireless transmiter in your camera hot shoe (Pocket Wizard, Skyport, Cybersync CST, or RF-602).

Turn each speedlilght on and you are ready to go.

If you don't have light stands, you can use a clamp like this (external link) or something like my modified spring clamp (see pic), or your tripod, or the little stands that come with the speedlights.

Hope this helps.
Mike

Here is a pic of my flash mounted on the hot shoe adapter which is on top of an umbrella adapter. The Skyport receiver is plugged into the hot shoe adapter cable. The spring clamp is a 99 cent clamp from the local hardware store and modified with a 1/4 inch bolt through the clamp and a short one on the handle. Pretty handy.

Another example. Speedlight is mounted in the hot shoe adapter which is mounted on the super clamp mentioned above. The cable is plugged into the Skyport receiver. I had a battery pack hooked up to the 540EZ for shooting basketball in a high school gym. Worked great!

If using a 580 EX you could get away with the 0126 model. Reason is the 0138 is to accommodate the weather sealing of 580 EXII or at least that seems to be the primary difference between them. Not sure if the 430 EXII is weather sealed. That could change your decision.
