This game is to help those of us who are trying to learn new tricks when it comes to editing.

Here's the breakdown of the game. I will post a picture that I choose, resized to exactly 1024 pixels maximum on the long side. Outside of being resized it has to be unedited...meaning no adjustments to any levels, it has to look like it did as it came out of the camera.

The game will last 72hrs and whoever can produce the best edited image (as judged by me) will be picked and it'll be their turn to post their unedited picture for all of us to take a crack at.

The participants must have their "Image Editing OK" turned on and they must provide at least a simple breakdown of how they edited the image, some entrants are a little vague on this point, please give us all details so we can learn and share tips. For instance if you use the unsharp mask tool or Smart Sharpen, provide us with the adjustments you used so others can try them out.

You can post multiple images, but the first image you post will be the one that is judged - all other images will be considered for knowledge and tip use only.

Also, please keep all comments, be they positive or negative, to yourself until after the game has ended.

If you happen to be the winner of the game please start the next one with the title of the game and the following number. For example…the next game should read "Before & After #256".

This contest ends at 8:00pm CST Sun, Feb 7rd, 2010

My Computer took a poo on me & I lost a year of photos :( & recently I havent had time to shoot unfortunately. I went through my external hard drive and pulled an old shot, which I took with my step mom's camera during a time I was waiting for my 30D to be shipped to me but wanted to take Photos & the Lincoln Park Zoo...

So edit this photo I took of a Lion @ the Lincoln Park Zoo w/ my step moms Nikon D40 ;)

Steve Irwin sighting

I've done a crap load to this image, mostly in LAB color:
IMAGE: http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/pp263/ThisIsHey/layers.jpg
In addition to the above, I've used S/H, hue/sat tweaks, heal brush, and match color.

I acquired an expensive camera so I can hang out in forums, annoy wedding photographers during formals and look down on P&S users... all the while telling people it's the photographer, not the camera.

Here is my turn:

Using Photoshop CS4:
1) Cropped
2) Increased Saturation (Greens only) + 38 for whole image
3) Increased Saturation (Yellows only) + 28 for subject only (masked everything else apart from the lion)
4) Increased Saturation (Reds only) + 40 for rocks only (masked everything else)
5) Smart sharpen (amount 195%, radius 1.0, basic, gaussian blur) for subject only (masked everything else)
6) Increased Contrast only +14

Duplicated background borrowed a pair of lions eyes and a duck. Lions eyes mine, duck courtesy of Limbo Poet on Flick Creative Commons.
Used transform on each separate eye and duplicated in colour dodge mode
Added duck and shadow. Unsharp mask and crop.

Rotated the photo a bit
played around with contrast and saturation
Used Nik software to do a bleach bypass filter and a light/darken edge filter
Cloned out spot on the lioness as well as hot spots (or most of them)
Copied image and desaturated then did a radial blur on a overlay filter and lowered the opacity
finally cropped and resided.

Ok, here is my adjustment.

I worked with the lion separately. For the lion I have used exposure, levels, contrast, color balance, saturation, photofilter (warm), highpass filter. I used different blending modes and opacity for everything.

For the rest I desaturated a bit and used lens blur to soften the image. I wanted the lion to pop.
