I took some photos at the last UCSD Men's Basketball game. All taken with a T1i @ 1600 ISO...that's why they are grainy :)

This was my first time ever shooting a sports event. Mostly used a 70-200 f4/L and the kit lens.

Must be good lighting to use at f4.

Due to all the noise, it makes me think he underexposed at 1600 ISO and pushed it later in post. So really, its about spot on with college gyms.
OP, 1/250 SS is too slow for sports. I think you would have found that a higher shutter speed would have yeilded better results.

Yea, that is exactly what I did. Underexposed to get faster shutter speeds and then boosted the exposure and fill lighting in Lightroom.

I agree - I probably should have shot faster. Gotta find the sweet spot for the right balance of noise, shutter speed, and exposure using my T1i indoors.

Hey Strif looks like you were on the floor to shot these pics. Is there room in the stands to get pics or are the SDSU games to crowded?

This is at a UCSD game, not an SDSU game. I know some of the photographers for the school newspaper so I was able to get on the floor. Good shots can be had in the stands though.

Striff:

I thought underexposing and adjusting later was a good idea. It's not. Just keep raising the ISO until you can get at LEAST 1/500, probably 1/640-800 for the college game, and take your noise lumps accordingly. Nothing worse than underexposing as it leads to more noise than exposing properly.

I like your choice of shots--espectially the ref/ball shot and the angle shot with the player dribbling. Very creating shots. Need to explore those more myself. thanks for the push in another direction!

I would get the 2.8 to shoot with at 1600 IS0 AND 1/500 to get rid of some the noise

I would never try to shoot underexposed to bump later in post unless absolutely needed. And I have never seen a venue need under exposed images at 3200 ISO. Better to max out your ISO and possibly slightly overexpose your image then reduce exposure in post, throw on some NR and you will like the shots much better.

I know we have talked about exposure a lot, but one thing you are missing with the f4 that the f2.8 lenses give is subject isolation. Your players kinda blend in with the fans, and that's not good.
