I was wondering if any of you guys have been to the annual eagle watch at Lake Billy Chinook in Oregon. The event is coming up, and it would be good if someone would share any experiences of photographing eagles at this place.

I have not been, but would suggest to you that if there is a lake nearer to you or a river closer to home, get out and explore it NOW. the leaves are off the trees and it is easy to spot eagle nests from the water all over the state, just not eagles so much, not yet. They will be very active soon, and you won't have to go to an event to see one if you get out and scout the nests now while they are very visible.

Thanks for the tip! Most of the lakes in Central Oregon, where I live, are frozen or covered by snow. I figured my best bet to see eagles would be at one of the events that we have around here. I guess I will start checking this area more closely.

Run down to Klamath Falls this weekend, it is an birding festival, the name escapes me at the moment. But Canon will be there sharing gear, lot's of seminars, tours and etc. or just head out to the refuges in both OR & CA.

I was down there last year before the event to play with some Canon reps and stuff like the 800mm f/5.6. Is a great place, can have hundreds of eagles in reasonable shooting distance, thousands of snow, white fronted and canadian geese and even some the "royalty" from POTN running around down there ;). Very rich habitat, good shooting, lots of subjects.

The festival in Klamath Falls is the winter wings festival. If you want to try the big canon glass contact Leo's Camera Shop @ 541-882-3331. This will be on Friday the 12th 8:30-1:00 and the cost is $20.00. The will have the 400 F2.8, 400 F4.0 DO, 600 F4 and 800 F5.6.
Here is the link to the Festival.

Thanks, folks. Terry, that is very useful information. While I have my 400mm F5.6 that I wanted to try, I may even consider renting F2.8, or 600 F4. It sounds like Klamath Falls is going to be a busy place next weekend.

Thanks a lot, Terry! And, those eagle shots on your flickr site are excellent. This is exactly what I was hoping to get. It looks like a very nice place to watch eagles.

If you can get out to the gorge you can find them there too. The other weekend I spotted a couple while driving highway 30 out by the old trojan plant and I wasn't even really trying. But if you're looking for a lot of them concentrated in one area you can't beat the wildlife refuges south of k-falls.

Thanks, folks. I think I will try Klamath falls as this is the prime place for wildlife viewing, particularly bald eagles.
