Remote Control w/ Bulb Exposure

I set my 400D to Bulb exposure & selected the "remote" setting. For some reason, my RC-1 remote would not trip the shutter.

However, after verifying that the remote worked properly on AV, TV & other M settings (other than Bulb), I tried the Bulb exposure again. This time it worked.

Bad ju-ju?
