Do you find velcro to be a problem on bags? I think it's Crumbler, who has "silent velcro" or something along those lines on their bags.

Is it a gimmick?

Depends on the use and the situations. I use the Think Tank Skin system on 90% of my assignments, and it is a huge luxury to be able to use their Silencer Straps in situations where you don't want to make noise (weddings, press conferences...)
In other situations where noise isn't an issue (most concerts, sporting events...) Velcro offers great security on packs while remaining light and relatively easy to open.
I guess it all comes down to personal taste though...

...shows a good decription of Crumplers "silent velcro"
its not a 'gimick'...it covers part of the velcro so it wont work and you have to use the clasp to close the bag

Good points.

I have heard some loud, strong velcro and find it a bit annoying.
I would also think it's bad in nature. Wouldn't you scare off animals?

I like the Domke bags a lot, but don't they have "loud" velcro? Can't afford Think Tank. :)

Thanks, I'll take a look.
I'm not nuts about the Crumbler bags, but I do like their "silent velcro".
Does other manufacturers use it?

ANY bag can be made quieter or silent.

Simply cover some/all of one side (bag side) of the existing velcro with a patch of velcro of the opposite polarity. Only allow whatever amount of active velcro to show as you want.

You can remove it when you desire maximum security and store it in the bag.

i agree, the difference between a homemade silencer and crumpler's silencer is that it not built in, but you can store one still no problem.

I don't really care about the velcro noise since I'm not a peeping tom, but I really absolutely hate velcro edges lascerating my fingers tips, from the bottom of my heart.
I found out the hard way, bought the bag new, then used it to travel.
I had 2-3 band aids on my finger tips throughout the trip. Absolutely rubbish!

And no, I don't like using moisturizer/lotion either, my finger tips around the nails are extremely sensitive and dry.

I have never managed to hurt myself with velcro. I think you might be special. Either that or you got really unlucky and had some sort of bizarre problem with your velcro.

The edges of the velcro are really sharp inside my Tamrac :(
I even trim them with scissors to round the edges, still hurts a little.
