Last year I was out taking some wildlife photos when it started to snow...I was in my truck with the window down and when I saw the snow falling on the window side rest I figured I would do a quick switch to my macro lens and I was able to snap the pic below....fast forward to today...it is now snowing out and I would like to know any/all tricks to try and get a better snowflake shot...meaning I don't want to sit in my truck and try to photo off the armrest again...

edit: One of the big questions is what sort of surface do you use to let the flake fall onto? Should it be put in the freezer first to slow down the melting?

tia for any and all help

not sure if this is going to work or not but I put a 9x9 pyrex dish into the freezer...in the dish is about an 1/8" of water and to the water I added dark blue food coloring (didn't have black)...once it freezes I will try and test it out...that is if the snow is still falling.

interesting idea, and nice photo above.

I have a 3/8" piece of solid black acrylic that has been pre-frozen in the freezer for quite some time. i just went outside, and tried to capture some, but i don't think its cold enough for several reasons.

-the majority of the "flakes" were broken into many pieces, no structure at all.
-my piece of frozen acrylic lasted only about 15min outside before the snow started to melt on the surface.

i'm gonna keep an eye on the temp, and periodically go outside to check on the structure of the flakes....but i think it has to be at least below 30.

I had zero luck with my method...at least as far as getting a good shot....the ice did seem to delay the melting of the snow I "caught" on it...lighting was my biggest struggle this time...last time I had oodles of ambient light but this time trying to shoot in my house where I don't have good lighting was to much to overcome.
