You have a good eye for volleyball action - these are nice captures with your 50mm. Are they cropped? What are your camera settings? Your shutter speed must be fairly high because the ball isn't blurry, but the photos are a bit dark. The noise seems to be under control. What is your ISO? The gym looks like a dungeon, but then most are.

For a mere $1799 you can own the EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS. This lens will impress your fellow volleyball Dads and over time increase your arm-strength considerably. A more affordable option is the EF 85 f/1.8 (380 bucks).

Gonzaga...Gonzaga Prep? Spokane? (I'm thinking not because they don't have a boys program that I'm aware of).

These are straight from my camera, on Manual exposure. The gymnasium has HORRIBLE lighting, like most though. I am hoping to get an 85 soon, or possibly a Sigma 24-70 f/2.8.

Gonzaga is the name of a high school here in the east coast of Newfoundland (I am on the west).
And here are the settings I used.

Camera: Canon EOS 40D
Exposure: 0.001 sec (1/800)
Aperture: f/1.8
Focal Length: 50 mm
ISO Speed: 1250
Exposure Bias: 0 EV
Flash: Off, Did not fire

I wouldn't hesitate to take your shutter down to 640 and iso up to 1600 to get a proper exposure.

1. You are underexposed
2. Straighten your horizons
3. Position yourself to shoot faces.

You may need to shoot with the 85mm f/1.8 or 135mm f/2.0 to get closer to the action.

If you go to an f/2.8 lens, that will be great but then you will have to shoot at ISO 3200 and post process with noise reduction.

Big K has a thread that discusses how to position yourself for volleyball.

I agree with what's already been said. Go for proper exposure. Based on the settings you posted that lighting is not awful. At 1.8 you should be able to get proper exposure. I wouldn't be too afraid of ISO3200 on the 40D if you do go to a 2.8 lens. You will undoubtedly need it.

I am in full agreement. Plus, these are far too loose.

D. All the above.

The only thing I might add would be a tweek to the WB in a couple, but with the cycling lights its hard to stay on top of. For displaying and CC purpose's strive to show us your edited shots if you can.
You do have a knack for timing with VB.
Thanks for for sharing your your work. look forward to seeing more.

I agree. Keep at it. Volleyball is tough and there are not many folks who do it well. Keep reviewing your work and the work of others to continually improve. Show us more from next time.
