Whats your thoughts on this lens ?
Pros and Cons ?
Is it worth the money that it is or not really ?
Tamron has great reviews on its 90 f/2.8 macro
Would you consider the Tammy over the Canon ?

Macro wise, I think the tamron and canon are on par (I'll add the Sigma 105 here as well). But for non macro shots, the USM on the Canon is amazing. Unless you really need the IS, this is a strong contender in the macro lens category. Will | WilliamLiuPhotography.com

When the L IS version came out I jumped on it. Different ways of doing macro have different advantages. It depends on what you'll be doing. I have tubes, macro lenses, extreme macro lenses, and closeup lenses. Each has its place. The 100mm is a good all around lens that with tubes is definetly worth the price and versatile. Not that great for moving subjects or ones you need to be far away from. Yes I know about this site, and I've read his reviews on this lens already. Get out and shoot

Insanely sharp, great build quality, and the USM AF doesn't disappoint. You can get new ones for $529 at most retailers right now. Post some pics tonight after you get it, just some shots around the cribbie or whatever you can get your hands on. That would be appreciated. Get out and shoot

TriqueDaddi Goldmember More info | Feb 05, 2010 17:16 | #10 I actually just ordered the Canon from Adorama a couple of hours ago. I had decided to get the Tamron before the Canon dropped to $529 in price. For the $70 or so I chose the Canon. I have the Tamron 17-50 and am very pleased with it. I think either lens will serve you well. Everyone says the AF is better on the Canon and that was the deciding factor for me. Canon 7DMKII,7D 40D, 20D, CANON 100-400mm IS 4.5/5.6L, Canon 70-200mm 2.8L, Canon 50mm 1.8, Canon 100mm 2.8 macro, Kenko Extension Tubes, Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 EX DC OS, 580EX II Flash,Gittos MH 5580 monopod, Thinktank Airport Takeoff.

I'm debating whether to upgrade but so far see nothing compelling to do it (but stand by). For the application you mentioned, with tubes, it will do everything you need. The Kenko tube set works very well for me. I think the comment about it not being good with moving subjects is comparing it to longer focal lengths, but very little jewelry that I'm aware of move much. I dont really need this for daily use,but there is a jeweler that contacted me about doing some stuff for her website and I'm just looking at what Macro I can pick up that maybe beneficial, without laying out the big bucks. Oh shucks if you just want to shoot some jewelry then you won't need super hi quality images then get a closeup lens, if you need higher quality get kenko tubes. ~ Jeff

The 24-70 or the 50 will work good with tubes. Just have to have enough lighting power to get good DOF and soft enough to keep the glare down on the jewelry. ~ Jeff
