Was looking through KEH today for flashes and noticed the EZ flashes are much cheaper than the EX series. Must be a good reason. What is it?

Simple. All EX flashes are 100% compatible with all EOS DSLR cameras to date. The EZ flashes are not. They only work in manual mode.

EZ's also cannot be slaved or IR triggered by an EX.

Thanks. So the EZ flashes would be no better on my EOS 1D than a Nikon flash I have that I can use in manual mode?

The EZ does have one advantage over the Nikon flash. An EZ flash can emit an AF assist beam just like an EX flash can and can be used with EOS DSLR cameras for focusing in low light.

My 540ez doesn't emit a beam... oh wait I took out the focus lamp to put a miniphone jack in to use it off camera :)
