HELP - Indoor Athletics

Hi All,

I have been asked to shoot a famous athlete tomorrow at an indoor meet. I thought it would be a great opportunity to test out my New Sigma 70-200 DG HSM. I will be using it on a 5D Mark II.

Question I have is that I will be shooting a 60 meter race (6.5 seconds).

Shall I rely on the autofocus in servo setting and fire off a burst?

Does anyone else out there in webland have this combo and can they help in anyway?

your 5D isn't the fastest camera body. but yeah, you seem to have the idea.

I have a 40D as my spare body. I was relying on the better low light properties of my 5D MK II. I would rather get 18 quality shots that 40 less quality with a slower shutter speed.

Not sure how light these Indoor arenas are, what ISO would go up to? I was thinking 1600 maybe 2000. Would you go to 3200 if it meant 500+ shutter speed?

its not just frames per second, its focusing speed as well.

Would you use the 40D instead?

I don't know the venue, and I don't know what you hope to achieve. I have doubts that even with the improved iso performance of the 5DII that you'll be able to achieve sufficient shutter speeds to stop a famous athlete sprinting. Although John Daly is a famous athlete so there is lattitude there I guess.

How do you get asked to shoot a famous athlete when you have no experience shooting sports?

There is another thread here on POTN by a woman who is either shooting the Olympics or the qualifiers and she has no sports experience either. She wants to know what settings to use.

I'm wondering how you inexperienced people get these gigs when there are thousands of qualified sports shooters looking for work.

Where do you intend to position yourself and what type of shot do you intend to capture?
