I don't think you've ever told me what you do for a living. I always figured you just made epic photos 24/7. :D

So I guess I am now wondering if this is just a limitation at 14mm with this lens and the less accurate outer AF points on the D3/D700.

Going to shoot with the lens over the weekend, then decide whether I want to return it again...:(

can we see some samples? I never had any issues with my 14-24 or any other lenses with my outer points on my D700, but I've never really looked for them either.

I'll get some samples up as soon as I can.
Center AF seems to be spot on with any lens. The outer most AF points aren't as accurate. I don't mean speed, but accuracy.

On the 14-24 it looks like it's back focusing on the outer AF points. As I mentioned, since this happens on both my D3 and D700, I'm wondering what the chances are that it's the body. My 24-70 does this to a certain extent as well. So does the 85 1.4D and Sigma 50 1.4 for that matter, but certainly not to the extent of the 14-24. My 70-200VRII and 200VR are fine. The outer points are softer than the center, but for all intents and purposes, it's good enough.

Not sure what to do at this point!

The 14-24 is probably one lens that I can focus recompose and not pay too much of a price, so that's going to be how I will use the lens this weekend.

Today I will set up my D700/14-24 and see if I have the same issues.

That would be very helpful and it's very kind of you to do this.

This is how I recreate this issue:

  • AF-S
  • No SB-900 or SB-900 with AF Assist beam turned off.
  • f2.8
  • check both at 14mm and 24mm. For me 24mm looks OK. It's off at 14mm.
  • Check center AF point. This should yield expected results both at 14mm and 24mm.
  • Check the outer most AF point to the left and right of center. On my lens it looks soft and it seems to be back focusing. It progressively gets worse as you move away from the center AF point.
  • I checked my lens at 16mm, 18mm, 20mm and they look to be the same as 14mm. At 24mm, it looks much better. Confusing...
I just got the 105VR today, so I am going to test it out on that as well to see if I see the same issue.

okay Nick, I did the test.

Things I noticed...it had a little trouble locking on to lower contrast subjects from those outside points.

Here's the gallery
http://lcimages.zenfolio.com/p157574038 (external link)

pwd: 1424

You can download the shots if you want. I titled them the focus point I used. Exif should show.

I had to use a flash sb400 because it's rainy & gloomy here...not enough light to do it properly otherwise.

On photo # I missed focus when I used the outside left point. I left it in anyway.

I did the first set at a reasonable distance (the subjects will have to be on 100% crop to see well but they are quite sharp at 100% crop) at 23mm (I thought I was 24mm) :o

The 2nd three are at 14mm.

The third set I got up close and did 14mm at as close to mfd as I could. I didn't shoot straight on because my tripod couldn't get as low as my coffee table.

The fourth set was mfd at 24mm.

First of all, thank you perm...thank you VERY MUCH in fact, for performing this test. It is extremely helpful.

Just to confirm, on the far right and far left photos, I should be looking at the "wooden card" on the right and left correct? (Not the chessboard or the remote control?)

IMO, it looks like your lens is performing similarly to mine. Namely, on the corner AF points, it's not nearly as sharp as the center AF point and the difference is obvious on closer inspection and especially the ones shot closer to the subject. Also, things look much better at 24mm no matter which AF point is being used.

Is that inline with your opinion of your test Perm?

I would be curious to find out how your 24-70 does on a similar test. Mine pretty much does similar things to the 14-24.
