I am in market for a 50. Still deciding between the 50 1.8, 50 1.4G and the Siggy. Can't find any review on the 50 1.8. Currently I am loving my 16-35. I didn't like the 70-200 2.8 for the weight, so I got 70-300 G VR and just pre-orderd Siggy 85 to replace it.

I went through the same thing with the 50mm lens. I chose the Sigma b/c of its bokeh, and AF speed.

surprisingly (at least it surprised me, coming from canon and knowing there isn't one quality 70-300) I REALLY like the nikon version. I like the bokeh on it too. I was totally shocked and totally prepared to think I'd made a mistake by getting rid of my 70-200.

I'm really interested in your thoughts on the sigma 85.

I'm pretty fond of the Nikon G - It's the only 50 I own.

Yes, I am kinda leaning toward Sigma atm. But I don't use prime often so I might want to save few hundred dollars if the overall performance of 1.8 is not very much different from 1.4.

I don't really use over 100mm. 70-300 is enough to serve me as a zoo lens. And I've got rid of my 24-70(mainly due to it's weight as a walkaround). Right now, I've got my UW cover and Telephone covered(16-35 and 70-300). Just need a 50 for indoor and 85 for portraiture. From the reviews on Sigma 50 and the MTF chart, I guess the Sigma 85 will be pretty good. I can always return it within 30 days if I am not satisfy.

I have to agree with 70-300vr. I was actually surprised with this lens. bad thing is it's not 2.8 but beyond that, it's an amazing lens. I have the canon 55-250 and this is quite different.

on another note...
I don't really pay attention on the back of the lens as I only clean the front if needed and I'm pretty cautious and quick on swapping lens (not in a windy/dusty area). I just noticed on my nikon 24-70g that it seem to have metal shavings. pictures been pretty clean so not sure if it's a common thing and no need to worry or is there something wearing out inside. bought this lens same day as the D700 Feb this year.
Anybody else having this?

noowwww..... hehehe I have read this a lot of times, I guess its really good. I am actually going for a 16-35mm, 50mm f/1.4, and 70-200mm lineup. but if you people are really happy with the 70-300mm then I might just go for it.

I usually don't shoot tele at night or in lowlight. and I was pretty used to using my tamron 18-270 at f/6.3-f/8.

BUT, with this lineup, my only fast lens would be the 50mm f/1.4D :( and my only weather sealed lens also will be the 16-35mm :(

In the 70-200 range the 70-300VR has pretty similar IQ to the Canon 70-200 f/4L that I used to own, however while the build quality is decent it's not anywhere close to the "L" or Nikon gold ring lenses. It's been a fantastic bang for the buck though.

I've never seen this on my Nikon 24-70 f/2.8, but I know I did clean the rear element once or twice in the past year and a half.

Sorry to hear you had to part with the 24-70. It's heavy, but wow is it a beautiful lens. I really like my Canon 24-70, but the Nikon version is definitely better wide open at all focal lengths.

the metal shaving is actually inside the rear element. I'll try to get a macro shot of it after dinner

Indeed, nothing to complain about that lens. It's probably one of the best lens I had.

I have a question guys...

sometimes when I press the menu button on the D700 it has some delay maybe 1-2second before it shows the menu, are yours the same? although sometimes it does not have any delays.
