LOL, I was just kidding. I don't think you can format a camera

hahaha well I know you can flash it.. but risky enough that it might brick your camera.

anyway, now I am reading reviews of the Nikkor 70-300mmVRII vs. 70-200mm f/2.8 VRII

hehe I want the 70-200mm but uhhhmm can't really justify the price and besides I will have to wait for a few more months to get it. unlike the 70-300mm I could get it within the month if I want it.

Yup, you can. Flashing the CMOS (not to be confused with the sensor) with a new firmware (or the same firmware) essentially formats it. ;)

Another thing I was thinking...and I posted this in a note to a friend but it might be helpful here:

Nikon's AF is extremely adaptable, via the menu settings, to however you need it to be. BUT, it has this weird option called release.

Actually there are 3 options in this menu:

Focus (can't shoot until your subject is in focus)
Focus + release (that allows you to take shots even when the camera is not in focus)
and release (you can shoot away but most often nothing is in focus)

I have everything set to focus in my AF menu banks. But their factory setting is RELEASE. So you can imagine how upset I was at getting all those oof shots when I first got my cameras. Once I found that prackashphotography blog that explained that AF setting, everything was good. Nikon's AF can be so elaborately set to your particular needs that you can practice, change a setting, practice, change another setting til it's exactly what you want. It just takes some time and understanding of the AF system. I would really recommend reading that blog that Mr. Clean linked to...it explains it better than the manual. My settings are pretty much what he suggests in the blog. Works really well too for me.

I have a new D300S and I'm glad to see this post.Thanks!

Dave

so if you buy a porsche or any other fast car, you have it trucked straight to the track, right?

No. I drive it to the track and then I ream the piss out of it (pardon the expression). What I dont do is check spark plug gap, lugnut torque, brake disc runout, belt tension, windshield wiper fluid viscosity, total lumens, coefficient of aerodynamic drag (I think you see where Im going here).

The 14-24 is, by all accounts but a few people here, an amazing lens. Im sorry if it doesnt take a great picture of some Quaker Oats but it takes amazing pictures of things its actually intended to take pictures of ;)

A great lens maybe...amazing...no way. It's definitely too much hype about it. If it doesn't pass a simple test well...it is what it is.

Im sorry. Were you the one that posted the cereal boxes?

EDIT: Sorry. Oatmeal. Looks like you are. Like I said, Im sorry that it doesnt take good pictures of oatmeal canisters. My advice is to stop spending close to $2000 to take pictures of oatmeal canisters lol

Yes. Well if it can't take an amazing pic for a simple cheap $5 oat meal..it doesn't worth $2000...maybe $500

Do you have an real world examples of the lens performing at a level that is anything less than spectacular?

The 24-70mm is a spectacular lens and for all the glowing reviews about 14-24mm I don't think it's spectacular. I have sent the images to Nikon and they agreed it has to go back to them :p.
