Interesting note about VR:
You can separate out the AF function onto the AFON button just like the * button. However, the VR function will only activate on shutter half-press.

Just thought I'd pop by and share something I find kind of interesting. I'm at a loss to explain it, but today I was at the Nat'l Gallery of Art and I swear almost everyone I saw was using a Nikon (with the exception of one other Canon shooter). Every museum I've been in I've seen Nikon shooters easily outnumbering Canon shooters and it's not like it's just entry levels either, some are packing D300s and up. What's good in the Nikon world for museum photography?

Anyway, I was in one of the rooms waiting in line to take a pic of a sculpture and the photog ahead of me took 3 shots (I'm assuming FF since the click was noticeable but a little muffled) and that was honestly one of the nicest shutter sounds I've heard. I actually felt flat out embarrassed to display my Drebel's mighty sneeze after what he did :(

it's all preference imho. the low light performance is great (canon is great as well) with nikon, esp the latest ones.
a neightbor with D60 has a really quite shutter but my D700 is a bit louder than my Rebel XSI if it helps in comparison.

I just shoot inside a bar a few days ago... and all I can say is my current setup rocks inside a very dark venue. it can lock on its subject in almost total darkness. BUT, 4 of us there were using nikon, they were using D90 and 18-105 kit lens and I was using the D700 and 50mm f/1.4D.. and I was the only one continuously getting focus confirmation. BUT the D90 is worlds better in lowlight focusing than my 500D with the 50mm f/1.8 or worst, with the 18-270mm

I did use a manual flash to light my subject.. a yong nuo YN-460II manual flash. but still I have a lot of keepers which I think were not possible to shoot with the rebel in those circumstances.

here is a sample shot:
ISO 6400, without flash, NO NR

ISO 1250, without flash, took advantage of the purple strobes, NO NR

I am pretty impressed with the results :) I am just sharing my opinion.

Thanks guys :)

darksike - Standing next to the guy who took the 3 pictures, his shutter sound was between a D300s and D700. Your comparison helped a lot since you're right about the D700 being louder, the XSi has that "sneeze" sound to it which follows the shutter and that's what really stood out after the Nikon shooter left.

monk3y - Nice shots! The one at 6400 looks like 1600 or 3200 in well lit conditions in the camera I currently have. I really like the way the colors are rendered, they give off a really warm feeling. What aperture was that at and is there much of a difference between the D/G versions of the 50 1.4? If that's around 2.8 or 4, that is an outstanding result for no NR, I'd be glad to use that kind of an ISO in images I would display without NR.

Nikon has really fascinated me when it comes to high ISO especially since I usually don't have the luxury of shooting in good lighting or with black/low contrast backgrounds that would accentuate noise and the FF offerings do a great job with noise, I was even impressed at ISO 2000 on the D90.

it was at f/1.8 and shutter speed of 1/60... I have no idea how big is the difference between the D and G though... but as far as I can tell, mine is not sharp at f/1.4 but is already usable at f/1.6 albeit still has a bit pronounce chromatic aberration.

I may have posted this a while ago, but I use no NR in my NBA shots, which are all 1/1000", f/3.5, ISO 6400.

wow!! now how different is the lighting between that shot and mine? hehe I was at f/1.8 1/60 and yours is at 1/1000 and f/3.5... you mean to say if properly exposed ISO 6400 would almost seem like ISO 800 or even 400 on my 500D hahaha wow!!! really... wow!! and still there are still cameras that have better high ISO performance than the D700? like the D3x?

In Nikon's lineup the D3s currently is the only one. The D3 and D700 are the same really.
