You just click the button down and it goes back to the center AF point.

Ninja, I used to love the 1.3 crop too but there's something about fullframe/full options that's pretty cool! I think you'd like the switch, so far I'm still very happy!

which button?

The dpad has a button in the middle, at least it should. Maybe on the D700 it isn't a separate button and you just push in the middle, but on the D3 there's a button dead center on the dpad.

Isn't that the way you select individual points too? Click and then move to a new point?

You can use the controls directly without the click. Clicking on the center button will get you back to the center AF point. You can set it up so it scrolls over...i.e. when you are on the right most point and hit the right button it will scroll over to the left most point. You can activate only a subset of AF points, etc.

There are a couple of things I despise on my Nikons that I forgot to mention before:

  1. Location of the ISO button on my D3 is a pure brain-dead decision on the designers part. It's better on the D700 since it's up top, but definitely not as easy to change compared to the Canon bodies I owned.
  2. On Canon bodies, MLU + Timer was a pretty routine operation. On the Nikon, it's not as intuitive...unless I still need to RTFM.
  3. LCD Screen. While it seemingly is just as good as the Canon equivalent hi-res screen, you can only zoom in to a certain extent before the resolution suddenly becomes an issue. On my D3, that's about 2 steps before hitting 100% zoom. For the D700, it's about 3 steps before 100%. You begin to see jaggies, a tell tale sign that it's digitally zoomed in. Not really a problem, but the screen on my 1DMKIV, 5DMKII, and 7D were sure nice!
That's about it really.

Northern Cebu, Philippines. All taken with the D700+50mm f/1.4D combo...(no choice, no other lens hehe)

Gorgeous location to shoot. I'm envious.

Hi Snir.
Having already been there/done that, what's making you think you'd like to head this way again?

hehe. to be honest, the reason i am thinking about making the switch again is that my shooting has changed. last time i made the switch, i was mainly a birder so the big super tele's were a must. now, i mainly do portraits and events so i have no need to spend 8k for a 500 F4. i still maintain that body and zoom lenses wise, nikon is the winner and honestly, the D700 that i had was the best body that i have ever owned (FF, Pro-AF, fast with great IQ? whats not to like). now that i only need a D700 and a few lenses (24-70, 70-200, 50 1.4 and maybe 1-2 more), i am very tempted to make the switch.

it's funny...my husband and I were talking last night about this very thing. We don't do much birding anymore either and when ninja made his post about switching we started talking about the canon cameras/lenses. We're both still at a place where there's not a canon camera that we would go back for. While there are good ones, there's always something we feel like we'd be giving up in order to make the switch...especially since there's not a new one we'd consider so we'd have to switch back to an older one.

I just wish there was some lens inspiration at nikon. I've seen a few really great ones but then most of the rest have something I don't like about that. I only felt that way about a couple of the canon lenses (like the 85L...lots of the nikon lenses remind me of the 85L...not in image quality but having something positive combined with something negative...like the new 16-35...great range, great vr and horrible distortion, or the nervous bokeh that visits many of the lenses...and frankly, after seeing the new 24 1.4, I'm so not impressed...). So, while I think the 24-70 and the 14-24 kick their canon counterparts out of the park, I do miss most of the canon lenses.

yeah that is a tough call. This is why i think that every person should do their own decision making and decide whats best for them. to be honest, if i was primarily a prime user, i would not even consider switching regardless of how good the bodies are. however, since i am mostly a zoom user, Nikon already offers me all the lenses that i need (i do wish that they were a tiny bit cheaper) and that combined with the amazing D700, i am having a tough time finding reason why NOT to make the jump again.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if manufacturers could standardise lens mounts etc so you could use any manufacturer's lenses on any manufacturer's body? Then we'd see real competition for quality - people could choose the best body and the best lens without bothering about issues of compatibility.

Ahh, Nirvana! But perfectly possible, if the will were only to be there.
