d90?
the D90 is the camera the convinced me to go Nikon ;)

even when I had my 500D, when my 2 brothers asked for recommendation on what camera should they buy, I recommended the D90, and I even bought 2 D90 ($1000/KIT) for them... there I saw the superior AF of Nikon, and the nice shutter sound, the quality feel of the body (even though its plastic) and I was convinced...

Haha that's the same exact thing that pulled me in!

There's just something about the Nikons that just makes them feel very solid and well put together, perhaps the finishing? Regardless, they feel great to use, even details like the control wheel just feel plain nice. No matter where I picked one up, I can't put them down. I'm planning to sell my 500D for a Nikon body as well, which one depends on my budget when I buy.

The D300s feels great too, it made AF speed on the Tamron 18-270 (which should be slow) feel almost like a SWM/USM lens. Like the D90, once it's in your hands, it just fits so nicely it's hard to put down. The shutter follows suit with the D90 and sounds great, I'd put them about even with the 40D from behind the shutter. Both are quiet enough to use in pretty quiet situations such as a quiet museum room. There was a guy before me shooting a D300 and it sounded like a nice subdued click, could barely tell he took a picture, and that was in a pretty quiet museum room with only one or two people moving in the next room over.

I used a D90 today. I must say it had a real quality feel, and the mirror sound was quite subdued compared to my usual 5D. What advantages do people who pay almost double for a D300s get over the D90?

D90 has one of the quietest shutter/mirror sounds. D700 is pretty loud, can't remember where the D300 fell in loudness, but I think it was closer to the D700 than the D90.

D300s is a warmed over D300 with some additional extras, like dual cards and video. Apart from the excellent AF and metering that has already been mentioned, another important thing you get with D300s is identical build and controls to D700 - which makes it easy to swap between them on the fly (D300 non-s has same build but the rear controller and CF door are different).

Image quality for D300s, D300 and D90 is pretty much identical - colours are not quite the same out of the D90, and D90 images fall apart quicker if you need to push them. Colours out of the D300/300s are virtually indistinguishable from D700 - which makes them great a combination if you want crop and FF.

However D90 is a great camera, and we recently sold our D300 but kept our D90. Rumour has it the D90 is going to be replaced sometime soon.

I dunno about that, I find the Canon's buttons and switches nicer, but I had them for about 6 years and i've only had a Nikon for about two weeks. There's buttons pretty much covering the Nikon, stuff is in such weird places, like FEC, why would they put it there? I think Canon win at UI, but Nikons can focus and that's more important.

i love the arrangement of the buttons on my d200, mostly because just about everything i need is accessible without a menu. nikons can focus, i completely agree. it's like they know exactly what you're looking at.

Money  Gotta get a computer good enough to run lightroom first though :(

And believe it or not, it really does speed up the focus speed of the Tamron. I don't know what or how, but when I half pressed the shutter and looked at the detail in the subject I was focusing on, the camera was already focused and ready to go. On a side note, I know it's weird, but I literally fell in love with the D300s and the 24-85 (older version I think it was). At least I can continue using the SD card on the S.

True. I was thinking about that recently too, not the build but the colors. I might miss the Canon colors and some other bits but you can enjoy the colors yet not do much else with a soft or OOF (sometimes both) image.

Everything I need is accessible on a Canon too, without having buttons in random places! I still don't know what the two to the left of the lens mount do (left when looking at it as a subject does). I think they might be programmable.

they are.

you can program a LOT of switches on higher end nikons.

list of things i love about my customizations:

-changing spot metering size
-group AF can be set to alwaus focus on the closest subject
-AUTO ISO is programmable for shutter and max ISO
-swap over functions of both rotary dials
-set or disable easy exposure compensation similar to the on/| button on cannons
-programmable buttons can be set to disable flash for a single shot
-menu banks can be mixed and matched for different image and exposure settings instead of having set C1, C2 features
-AF can be set to focus or shutter priority
-NEF RAW compression

although a lot of these have 'common-sense' settings, i like having the ability to have different camera settings programmed in for quick switching between different subjects.

(for example i have landscape RAW, portrait RAW, sports RAW, and point and shoot JPEG all programmed in for different scenarios).

I have to agree with tim on this one... I miss my canon buttons, very easy to click on anything...and the UI is indeed lightyears ahead of Nikon. on the other hand the insane amount of buttons might be necessary to be able to access ALL the features of the Nikon bodies...compared to Canons

yes tim they are programmable, I use the upper one to call my Favorite FUnctions... like shooting banks, ISO, image quality. and the lower button for bracketing :)

I wouldn't say the D700 shutter is nice, or not nice, i'd say it's LOUD! I'll have to take less image during a ceremony as I think it'd be intrusive. Of course now I can get things in focus more reliably I don't need to take as many photos :)

monk3y wrote in post #10603141 (external link)
yeah it is loud, I act as if I don't hear the shutter when in front of many people hahaha... its nice though, it feels sturdy compared to my rebel, although I can't remember if it sounds nicer thant he 40D.

The higher end Canon bodies are all loud. I'm talking the 1 series bodies. The MKIV I used to have was loud. It has that crisp sound. Not the dampened sound of the 40D, 50D, 7D, 5D, 5DMKII.

Actually, the D700 is dampened compared to the D3. The D3 sounds very similar to the 1 series. I actually love the sound.

Yeah going from a 1 series to a d700, it sounds pretty much the same. The prosumer bodies do have that damped sound though.
Tim, did you ever decide on a prime?

I love the programmable function. I now set the preview button to spot metering. big time saver then using the dial on AF-L. don't have to take your eye off the viewfinder

I like the idea of the Sigma 50 F1.4, it sounds like an ok lens. I guess this is where Canon kicks Nikons butt. I'm not a fan of third party lenses. I think i'll skip it for now though and get it later. Unless I change my mind and get it soon.
