I like the idea of the Sigma 50 F1.4, it sounds like an ok lens. I guess this is where Canon kicks Nikons butt. I'm not a fan of third party lenses. I think i'll skip it for now though and get it later. Unless I change my mind and get it soon.

Actually Canon doesn't kick Nikon's butt when it comes to a 50mm prime. They are all pretty much the same. Decent IQ wide open, gets sharper at f2, not the quickest AF, etc. I had the 50L and I can honestly say I am just as happy if not happier with my Sigma 50 1.4 at 1/3 the price.:D

Now as far as the 35L, 85L, 851.8, 100 f2, 135L is concerned, you are right. Canon kicks Nikon's butt!

I was meaning variety of primes, and even for 50mm Nikon apparently doesn't even have a single decent one, which is why people get the Sigma.

just don't buy the prime for now tim, I think as you said, you are pretty satisfied with the DOF of the 24-70mm :) and you are even ok with using f/4. so just wait and see :)

I bought my 50mm coz I thought I want a 16-35mm, 50mm, 70-300mm set up...

but changed my mind, and I want the 12-24, 24-70, 70-300mm setup instead... but I won't be selling my 50mm f/1.4D... its handy enough for those times when I want a light setup for walking around. I might also try startrail shooting with it

Just out of curiosity Tim what do you mean 'ok lens'? The Sigma 50 has a pretty good following. It's beyond good, heck it even challenges the 50L for some people. Heck, Nikon has made me even more of a third party fan for whatever reason, they just seem to work better and it helps bridge the prime gaps.

I would like a bit less DOF than the 24-70 at F2.8. The DOF calculator says:
- 70mm, F2.8, subject is 1.5m from the camera, DOF is 7.5cm
- 50mm, F1.4, subject is 1.2m from the camera, DOF is 4.6cm

That's not a big difference really, and the 24-70 would be sharper.

The 50mm would be nice to have as a backup though, or a compact general purpose lens. I'll get it some time unless a better option pops up. I think 85mm would be too long for me.

Just the reports of AF aren't stellar, plus after my Sigma 30 F1.4 on the 7D wasn't at all accurate i'm just not a third party lens fan.

I was never a third party fan either, but since I wasn't too crazy about the Nikon 50 G, I felt I had no choice. In retrospect, I am glad I gave the Sigma 50 1.4 a try. My search for a 50mm prime is over for now.

Yeah i'll get one sooner or later. They're not expensive but the rest of the stuff I need to buy is.

I think it's a big difference, the out of focus area should be more out of focus.
If I were you, and I'm surely not in many ways, I too would stick with the 24-70 and the 70-200. That said though, I have more 'fun' shooting with the 24/50/150 primes I have now and I like the 'pop' even more. Even if it takes me more shots to get the right one, I prefer the 50mm at f1.8-f2 vs the 70 at 2.8...
Take that for what it's worth, which is pretty much nothing

hey guys... I was just thinking...

if you were a hobbyist like me... would the Nikkor 24-70mm be worth it compared to the tamron 28-75mm? I did not include the sigma 24-70mm because for that price I would just definitely add more and go straight to the Nikkor.

I am just wondering, I am not in a hurry at all, I can save and wait for a couple of months before I need it, most likely December before my China trip.

just need your input :) thanks

Has a box and a (cheap looking) carry case/bag.

You can see it on the site that's selling it.

:D

BTW it has real rubber on the grip part, it's not plastic.

I should just buy this one instead of the real thing, I could definitely afford this right now hahahaha ;)

As a hobbyist a 28-75 would be fine. I wonder though for a single walkaround lens if wider would be useful, even 18-70 or something would be good, if it was F2.8 or so. I don't think that lens exists though
