yeah I think that's the key... I rarely get to shoot people though.
and I need a better flash for it.

do you use auto ISO tim?

Auto ISO in manual mode is useless IMO because you can't do EC. It will always force you to the center. USELESS. (Of course unless I am missing something here...which is very possible ) I was going to experiment with it shooting baseball by setting the min shutter speed at something like 1/1000-1/2000, f4, Auto ISO in manual mode. But the meter is thrown off too easily (jersey color, etc.) for it to be any good...

At least in Av/Tv mode, you can use Auto ISO and still dial in EC. That works rather well. But then, I don't shoot in Av mode when I shoot sports and the lighting doesn't change too much.

Oh well...better luck next time!

I switched to Nikon by pretty much by trading my Canon gear locally for Nikon gear 4 months ago. This was the NIGHT before I was to leave for vacation. At the time the Nikon gear consisted of the D3, 24-70, 70-200VRII, 85 1.4D and SB-900. I was on the plane with the camera on the tray table with the user's manual for the camera and flash on my iPhone reading away. By the plane landed, I had my D3 set up just the way I wanted. Coming from a 1DMKIII/MKIV, it wasn't too complicated at all.

Did I struggle on my vacation? Sure did. I took my time changing settings, etc. But I managed.

I can tell you it took a good 4-5 weeks until I really got comfortable with things. I shot a few weddings, a concert, and some baseball games with my Nikon gear since then, so needless to say I feel completely at home now.

Just a matter of getting used to things.

hey nick, did you use Ken Rockwell's iphone manual?

the only thing that bothers me now is the 2 wheel, I keep turning one or the other to change either aperture or shutter speed. all other buttons seems natural to me already.

anyone else excited about the n95?

the features list seems right from the 300s, including a metal frame--but for much less.

nick, I think EC affects Auto ISO also, I mean for example, if you set your EC +1, then at the same shutter speed and aperture, instead of using ISO 200, the camera might use ISO400 to achieve the +1 EC that you have set.

I hate to use TV/AV though, I can't seem to get the look that I want. so I never use them, I either use Auto ISO or Manual all the way.

my question is, does Auto ISO and e-ttl work together? hehe

I am very comfortable using Manual all the time, but I found it very easy/convenient to use Auto ISO now. I am even afraid I might get too lazy because of it hehe

Thank you nick :) I missed the vivid colors of the 500D though, so I cranked up the saturation til my eyes hurt hahaha

n95 is the codename for the new D90 replacement:P although it might be called something else when it hits the market.

it's a magnesium alloy (a first for this series) n90 replacement due around september to compete with the canon 60D.

I'm interested in the "D700-like" ISO rumours. The D300/D300s are about 1 stop worse than D700 for noise performance, so a D95 that gets seriously close to D700 ISO would be very interesting, especially in a metal body - and I guess would raise expectations for any D700/D3 replacements to come in the future.

Full HD with working AF would also be nice to have.

Yes, I know EC works in Av/Tv and I think it's actually great. But I was talking about Manual mode. You can't dial in EC. Try it for yourself. You'll always end up in the center. (i.e. chasing the needle) That's the next step.

Yes, I believe Auto ISO and e-ttle work together.

I use manual 95% of the time. When I am on vacation, I'm probably on Av mode most of the time. It really depends on the situation I suppose.

I really haven't noticed any color issues/differences between the Canon cameras I used to own and Nikon. I have my workflow set already so all it takes is a little nudge in contrast/saturation/Vividness, etc.

To be honest, I shoot my Nikons as if they were Canon cameras. They are just tools and I haven't missed a beat since switching over.

noise is the next frontier for nikon. i'd be excited for any iso improvement over my CCD d200 (although it gives me a fondness for film grain), but to have noise levels and ISO performance equal or better than the d700 for a sub 1200 dollar camera makes the 95 a really attractive option for me. especially since they ditched the plastic body.

but that will have to wait since i spent that money on a 24-105 L for my rebel xs.

glass before bodies.

hmmmm.... I can't really see a new camera coming in the next few months. but if there is, then I guess it will be the D90 replacement. high ISO the same as the D700? Its probably possible... and at half the price? wow!!

if that comes out though, D700/D300's sales will be greatly affected I guess...

the only advantage that will remain of the D700/D300's are AF/FPS performance.

Who knows. My guess would be that it'll be kind what the 7D was last year where people were buzzing over its high ISO capabilities. That turned out to be a little bit of a dud. The 7D is no better than a 5DC in that category IMO.

You just can't cram that many pixels on a crop sensor and expect that kind of high ISO performance.

Hey, but who knows. They did improve the D3/D700 by 1.5 stops with the D3s, so if anybody can pull it off, it's Nikon.

I found the on camera VIVID mode of the 500D to be more vivid than the D700..but yes I could adjust it in post just like what I did on that sunset shot. so no problem :D

wow!!! if E-ttl does work with Auto ISO, I might consider upgrading my flash unit soon... its really difficult to use Manual Flash in an event. it was never my priority since I primarily shoot landscapes, but for the past month, I have shot 3 events haha

I really did not notice the Auto ISO / EC though, i'll give it a try next time. I do notice the needle to be always at the middle on Auto ISO.

I don't use any of the picture styles so that's a moot point.
Yep, try it next time in manual mode and you'll see you can't over/under expose. Pretty useless IMO.
