anyway I KNOW a lot of people hate it...and it hideously ugly  so I say use whatever makes you happy.

I'm off.
Oh and Steven, marriage is great...I've been married for almost 26 years. I'm sure these guys do too or they wouldn't do the obligatory complaining

Ms. Permie what is your monitor? I find your 2nd photo a little dim (probably its my laptop monitor).

I checked my photos on my GF's MBP, and they look a little too bright and saturated, compared to when I am looking at them on my laptop.

Any Idea why I got something like this?

50mm f/1.4D @ f/2.2 1/160 ISO 1000 and the kid is not even moving very fast.

I can't see anything in focus on the frame at all...yet the camera locked focus and clicked

IMAGE: http://lh5.ggpht.com/__0prHnAfUfg/TGpVLJdiX4I/AAAAAAAAAYw/qMKQz8eXNX4/s720/hugoparty-5197.jpg

I have seen a couple of these shots from last week. nothing seems to be in focus yet the camera will confirm AF, 50mm f/1.4D and 70-300mm both exhibits this, maybe its user error or something...

thoughts?

haha no seriously though tim, any thoughts about this? I don't think 1/160 at 50mm will cause this blurred photo. I saw a couple of this and can't seem to pinpoint the cause. even at f/5.6 on the 70-300mm I get something like this, maybe I'm too jerky?

We've had a couple of isolated shots like this (we use 3D tracking), and I've always put it down to camera shake through trying to grab a shot - though I guess it could be a tracking malfunction.

While the general rule of thumb to avoid shake is have shutter speed = focal length (1/50th in this case), I don't believe that you could guarantee to avoid shake at 1/160th.

No idea, really. I'd check the shots at similar times to see what they look like.

hey Permie. when you do portraits outside, do you shoot with the flash nakkid? I got used to umbrellas. I think my mentality got stuck when I always hear bare flash = too strong. I need to update my strategy as when windy days, I can still do outside.

I use umbrellas or nikkid. I also use a small softbox, works real well for close portraits. I'm happy w/ it.

I think its user error... I just checked my shots that time and... look below... I was just confused since the camera acquired focus but look at these photos..

all are using 50mm f/1.4D @ 1/160 f/2.0-2.2 and all are the same... hmmmmm

Are you using the "focus only" mode? (if so I'd guess it was user error, if not, I'd switch to that and see how you do)

ahhh... mine is not calibrated though...

yes I am using focus only, I am not sure what's wrong though, I was not really moving very much and I don't think these kids are moving fast enough also... although as you can see there are other shots at the same settings that turned out like that.

these shots are taken with the D700 + 70-300mm (rejects due to bad focus)

1/500

I am using S mode and Focus.

I have a lot of keepers but i am just baffled by the number of shots that turn out like this.

EDIT: I noticed these photos look sharper here than in Picasa and on the copy on my hard drive

Why S mode and not C for moving targets?

what about testing it into the continuous focus mode? I use that for everything that's moving?
