some samples with the sigma (on canon) here.

bokeh looks good. The round highlights look good so far. Not seeing weird orange halos. Not seeing much CA either.

It's hard to tell if it's very sharp wide open in these shots though.

Agreed. Can't really tell. Some of the shots have that tell tale ghostly look to things, but then others look crisp so I can't draw any conclusions. Same thing with the bokeh. Not nearly enough variety to judge. But so far things look promising.

The 85mm ship has sailed for me. I'm sticking with my 85G. I just love the lens.

Nikon needs to come out with a pro level 50mm lens. Not sure why they skimped on that focal length while they have pro level lenses at 24, 35, and 85. Kinda weird.

I'm mildly intrigued by the 35G, but adding yet another lens is the last thing I need and I absolutely love my 24G.

I am pretty much all set. I think the only thing I might be interested in is if they come out with a new AF-S 135mm f2 VRII. That would be positively butt kicking!

Oh yeah, I use the 105VR so rarely, I kinda felt bad and forced myself to actually bring it and use it for a few shots at the weddings this weekend. I need to check out the results. I need to make a decision on that. I forgot that I still had the 35 f2. Need to off that lens as well.

I was going to visit Rome this autumn but it never happened. I sought advice on what to take, and was advised "as wide as possible up to around 100". So for my Canon FF setup I would have taken my 12-24 and my 24-105, plus probably my nifty 50 as a low light option as it's so light. Plus a powerful flash that I have yet to buy. The heavy 100-400 I would reluctantly have left at home, and as I rarely use a tripod I would probably have left that as well. I might have taken a beanbag instead.

Nick, I'm looking forward to some really interesting shots around Rome, a city I have yet to visit.

5D & 7D (both gripped), 24-105L, 100-400L, 15-85, 50 f1.8, Tamron 28-75, Sigma 12-24, G10, EX-Z55 & U/W housing, A1+10 lenses, tripods, lighting gear, etc. etc.

Yeah, since there's bound to be lots of indoor shooting where flash can't be used, I would ideally want to pack my 24G too. I'm thinking the 24-70 is probably a no-brainer, but then that's like 4 lenses right there so I'll need to make a decision. I think 4 lenses is the absolute upper limit. Ideally I want to keep it at 3. 14-24 is set in stone. Well, at least I think it is. I think that might be a great lens to use in places like the Vatican and the Coliseum. I'm not sure I need/want 2 zooms. But again, I want a wide fast prime so I want to bring my 24G with me. That leaves one more lens. If I bring the 85G, that's a big gap between 24 and 85. If I bring my 50, that's probably a little too short. If I bring my 24-70, that'll be 3 lenses that can do 24mm. Quite redundant. I ALWAYS go through this...:lol::lol:

Yes, this is quite nice, except for the ever-so-slight halo around the structure. But really, very, very nice!

when i went to the Vatican, the 24L stayed on my camera and it worked perfectly .. i was able to get a full view of St. Peter square and everything on the inside as well. Plus the 1.4 really worked well inside when flash wasn't allowed even thou i didn't bother to bring a flash nor did i miss it .. on my Euro trip, everything was caught in natural light.

i guess its all depending on how you shoot and what you want to shoot .. for me, it was definitely all wide stuff .. the only few times the reach came out of the bag was when I was way too far from the Dome of the Rock in Israel and when I want to get a close up shot of the Sphinx .. I think that was mainly it

In other words, I won't miss 14mm-23mm then? I always think it would be cool to use the 14-24 for these things, then end up just using it at 24mm. Shooting anything at 14mm is certainly a very specific thing. I just thought it might be a fun lens to carry around in Italy.

Oh yeah, that reminds me. I need to get a new bag for this trip.:lol:

oh no .. 24 was good enough at or around the Vatican for me .. but everywhere else .. 17-40 and mostly at 17 ..

this is what i would bring from your bag ..

D700 w/o grip .. change the strap to a no name one
14-24 for all the landscape and there's tons of it
24G - for low light stuff, like while you're inside churches or dark halls
85G - for the reach, statutes, monuments .. etc

that right there should be heavy enough to carry around all day :D

Sigh...is it too much to ask for more useful photos? Shooting that hanging glass piece is probably not the best way to test the bokeh out.

Just seems like such a big gap between 24 and 85. Maybe I can swing the Sigma 50. That's not so heavy and I've carried much more gear on vacation...like the 200VR and 3 additional lenses. Of course it killed my back too!

I'll probably bring my flash too. Maybe a tripod.
