Ok, now I have a dumb question. I have a bunch of m42 mount lenses so I bought and adapter so that I could use them. I get good focus, but when I try to use the built in flash it doesn't fire. I am in Manual mode, when I depress the shutter [ro4] flashes on the LCD.

Any ideas

r04 is the buffer, but the flashing indicates that autofocus is struggling. Weird. Did you try it in manual focus?

I'm going to begin pushing my high ISO shots 10 stops then measure pattern noise in the RGB channels if you guys keep the name calling up! ;););)

nahahaha... go ahead, you could also create a thread and say ISO 102,000 is cleaner than ISO 100 and I could prove it :lol::lol:

Because it's accurately reporting the actual f-stop, as the focal length changes pretty drastically. That 105, when focused at 1:1, is more along the lines of a 210mm. The physical diaphragm hasn't changed though.

Canon for some reason doesn't report the change, but it happens in any macro design as you approach 1:1. Actually, if you straight up measure light levels, the closer you focus the less light is let in. It's just far less apparent with normal lenses due to the true focal length not shifting nearly as drastically as you approach MFD.

That got me the first time I used a Nikon too. It's apparently a physics thing, something to do with the optical properties of all lenses. Apparently the Nikon is accurately reporting things, whereas Canon does it correctly and just doesn't tell the user about it.

Thanks for the clarification guys. So then that means the 50mm 1.4 doesn't do this right, mostly just the Nikon macro lenses?

from what i understood all macro lenses do it at 1:1 magnification but Nikon is the only ones that tells the user of what its doing

It's all macro lenses on Nikon bodies. It's not really stopping down the lens but the camera is just reporting the loss of light. A portrait shot on my Sigma 150 Macro might read f4 but if it's wide open, it's still f2.8. Confusing at first for sure.

Here's where I discovered it, somewhat the hard way :D :

It's not really reporting the loss of light, it's reporting the change in the actual f stop. There is a loss of light, but it's expected as your focal length has doubled to get you focused that close. What cracks me up is that it doesn't report the change in focal length! Lenses focus entirely by changing their focal length, and focusing that close takes a big change.

Interesting. I read through that Mike and it makes sense now. I just didn't realize how much more the focal length actually has to change. Good to know. Now I need to get the 50mm. Sweet. Thanks.

It's almost better if you don't read it :lol::lol:

James, isn't the fstop changing because of loss of light?
