Ok... I need some help in deciding my next lens. So far, it has come down to three selections.
1) 85 1.4 ( I can do a comparison between this and the 85 L but, is the AF any good?)
2) Zeiss 21 ZF ( This wide angle prime is just sharp!)
3) 14-24. (I know this is an overlap but, it doesn't matter. I still have my Canon lineup 16mm through 200mm and I since I'm UWA whore like Ben :), I can wait for the Lee holder by summer)

Just thinking out loud right now but, I always appreciate your input. :)

well it AFs faster than the L... ;)

2) Zeiss 21 ZF ( This wide angle prime is just sharp!)

UWA/WA primes have never appealed to me. Each FL is so different on the wide end I go with one fast wide prime than get a UWA zoom for everything else.

3) 14-24. (I know this is an overlap but, it doesn't matter. I still have my Canon lineup 16mm through 200mm and I since I'm UWA whore like Ben :), I can wait for the Lee holder by summer)

you should really pick a system and convert 100% IMHO, but between this and the 85, those would be my choices. I had a siggy 12-24mm and 85 when I first switched, then someone planted the 14-24mm bug in my ear and I switched. I've since gone back only w/o the 85. 85 FOR ME is just awfully tight since my primes get the most use inside.

i know, but I was thinking - best of both worlds, also my 2 zf glass that I wont sell would be at home on the d700, but im thinking you are right, the 5d2 allows for same batteries settings etc...

the other thing is I would not mind a Nikon? Prices are the same... Its very difficult as it be a fun thing to do, logic and work wise the 5d2 is the obvious choice...

If I had a 5D2 I wouldn't buy a D700. Not because the Canon is better because in several important ways it isn't, but because the two cameras are sufficiently similar that I wouldn't be gaining a lot, but the cost would be severe (all that new glass). I wouldn't buy a D700 now anyway as I'm quite convinced it'll be replaced soon, and I think the replacement will be a major upgrade from the existing model. So used prices will (probably) plummet. But who knows? Nikon have decided to follow Canon in the pixel searching game, and they may screw up and lose some of the famed D700 IQ.

If I were looking for a superb camera at a good price I'd wait until a few months after the new D700 comes out, then buy the old model.

I'm currently in the Canon camp but I won't be buying the 5D2 anyway - I'm equally sure the 5D3 won't be long and I think it'll have major upgrades from the 5D2.

5D & 7D (both gripped), 24-105L, 100-400L, 15-85, 50 f1.8, Tamron 28-75, Sigma 12-24, G10, EX-Z55 & U/W housing, A1+10 lenses, tripods, lighting gear, etc. etc.

I love my 24-70 for a one lens solution.

Julian I also love my 85 but I'm not really a UWA whore like y'all. I get along with my lowly 18-35 just fine :D

Thanks for the feedback guys. I really want to test this camera in real situations for my landscapes when I head to St. Lucia in April. From there, I will decide whether or not to sell off my Canon kit. If I do, I'll pick up a D3X or a replacement to the D700( whenever that happens ). I'll have no problems selling off my kit since I do have a few local friends that will buy it off me. Besides, I can't shoot two systems forever. :)

As for the 85, I actually like this focal length for tight shooting/portraits. I would go wider but, I anything wider for me is too wide when it comes to lowlight primes. :)

There is going to be a fight on the shelf tonight. I placed my New Nikon between some remaining a Canon lenses and there was an awkward silence.

Julian I also really like 85mm as a FL. I may be waiting to get one on this side though. I am still very curious to see the new Sigma since I am a big fan of their lenses

:shock::shock:

WOW,
The 10-20mm was one of my favorite lenses on the 40D and 1D but I may have to get one of these.
