That's my point exactly!

Anyone who thinks 18MP is enough obviously doesn't print large enough!

You've got to admit, however... most people don't print large enough to need/warrant 36mp.

And that's the thing. Canon would like to sell quantity.

A D800 image only has 40% larger dimensions over a 1Dx...

36MP gets you 300dpi at 24x16" with no interpolation. That's not unreasonably large.

That's a pretty big difference.

It's the difference between having a 72" wide print and a 100" wide print, at equal sharpness.

That doesn't change the fact that most people don't even print 24x16. You two more than likely would and do. But most still don't.

And most people also don't shoot at 8fps. Most people don't routinely shoot at ISO 12800 or higher.

But there are shooters working for the likes of AP and SI, no? They'll want higher ISO and more FPS more than they care for 36mp.

I'm certainly not saying your desire for more MP is wrong and unwarranted. Nor am I saying my disregard for more MP is the right way to approach this. I'm simply citing the truth that, seriously, for most who are willing to spend $2000-$3000 on such a camera... 36mp really is over kill.

I'm very glad that Nikon at least is willing to change from their original stance of avoiding high resolution. That's great for Nikon shooters who wanted more resolution. Sucks for Canon shooters thinking/wanting/needing more than 21mp. But again... the fact remains most people who are shooting with the 5D2 don't need it.

There hasn't yet been any kind of announcement from Canon either way.

According to Canon, the original concept of the 5D was to wean well-heeled film enthusiasts away from their Fujichrome. They were never after volume--that's what Rebels are for. Clearly they created the 7D as their mid-level (single-digit model designation) action camera.

The existence of the 7D as a single-digit model strongly suggest to me that they'll keep the 5D as the high resolution mid-level camera...especially with Nikon now having entered the high-resolution segment. Canon is not going to abandon that segment to Nikon.

The M9 is a fantastic piece of hardware. ;) No company out there can compete with it since it's the only FF rangefinder on the market. :)

How much of it is the lenses and how much is it the sensor?

For that reason, they're more likely to get the 1Dx or D4.

People shooting for Nat Geo, Vogue, Scientific American, etc. want more megapixels far more than they want higher ISO or more FPS. Nikon has given each type of shooter an option - D4 for the high speed/high ISO, D800 for the resolution. Canon has produced one for the high speed/high ISO crowd (1Dx) but, as yet, nothing for resolution. That's a significant proportion of the market share.

i used one for a few days at a porsche driving school event, my attorney had it. it was quick, easy to use and felt well made, but other than i didn't see anything stellar about it.
he brought along a bad cable, so we had a hard time getting the photos off the thing.

Well, be fair, "most" people take pics with their cell phones. :P And I dunno, poster prints are getting pretty inexpensive (see costco for an example). There is a glut of inexpensive 13x19 printers that can be bought inexpensively and deliver pro quality results (as good of results as the bigger printers deliver in 99% of situations, some perhaps better due to higher dpi). There is a glut of used 17"+ wide printers that are under a grand, too. Printing big is fun, and one of the things that is actually increasing in the photo industry (where 4x6 prints are in a decline). =p

If you want to get the best of the M9 camera, the wallet breaker is the fast lenses. :)
